If being doin masonry restoration work for a good part of a decade, and would love to help you out. "I prefer to use independent contractors, but was told by several contractors that I would need to use Epp Foundation for this job. I should have brought someone in from out of town. Unbeknownst to me, a salesman (not someone who does the work) came out to make the bid. It ended up being a situation where he didn't know what needed to be done. To make a long story short, using Epp is like taking your vehicle to a salesman to find out what needs repaired instead of to a mechanic. This cost me both time and money. The crew was great but the salesman dropped the ball and his boss backed him instead of providing customer support. Epp repaired some concrete outside the building, but I used an independent contractor to repair the inside and saved 50% on the cost of the repair. Seek out another company even if it means bringing someone in from out of town."

A traditional German schmear uses mortar, making it unsuitable for adherence to painted surfaces. Professionals recommend removing any existing paint before applying mortar. However, you can rough up the painted surface and clean it to test if the mortar will stick. Remember that the underlying paint's texture and color may affect the schmear's final appearance—so starting with a bare brick wall will ensure the ideal finish.

You may not need a hammer drill if you’re planning on drilling one or two very small diameter holes in brick. For holes with a diameter of 3/16-inch or less, a regular drill with a masonry bit can do the job. However, the bit will heat up quickly, and the process will take significantly longer than with a hammer drill. Prepare to cool your drill bit down in a bucket of water more often.

You will repoint over a fraction of the old mortar, but you should scrape away 1/2 to 1 inch of mortar from the joints before repointing. Otherwise, the repointing is only masking the weakened mortar instead of actually replacing it, which could put your chimney at risk of bigger, more expensive damages later on.

Mortar, or masonry mortar, is mainly used in joints and as parging for stone, brick, or cement construction. Stucco is primarily a surface material used as wall coverings.
