"Once we found a time that worked for both of us, I asked how much it would be. Was told $85. They walk in my house without putting on shoe coverings (we have new carpet) and shoe coverings should just be a given for any service coming into a customer house. The one he sent couldn't figure it out. He was here for MAYBE 10 minutes; he called someone to try and figure it out, ended up going to Menards to purchase a different switch, (that's ok), was gone MAYBE 45 minutes, installe switch and charged $200. Upon my arrival home in the evening, switch did not work. Had to keep another switch on to make the one they installed work. He sent another young man the next day after and he was here MAYBE 10 minutes (and the owner implied he should charge more since they had to come back- REALLY???) I asked if we could some money refunded and was told I could stop by the shop and get 1/2 hour refunded. He can keep is $42.50 to send his employees to school. My opinion total cost should not have been more than $100."

"Grayson quickly responded to my inquiry about hanging a 65" TV above the fireplace. He provided a reasonable quote and was able to complete the work just two days later. He even arrived early. Once his helper arrived, they got right to work. Both were well-mannered, friendly, respectful, and polite throughout the entire process. They made sure the TV was placed exactly where I wanted it. After finishing, Grayson asked for a paper towel to wipe off any fingerprints and even offered to vacuum the area. I highly recommend Grayson and RidderYoung Property Services. I will definitely be calling him again for any future electronic or electrical jobs."

"The HandyMasters were a great find for us and weâ re glad we found them. Eddie is super accountable and great at communicating schedules and timing. And the attention to detail, and craftsmanship in their work is top-notch! Eddie and his brother are very knowledgeable and they were a pleasure to work with. They also clean up after themselves very well, which you donâ t always get that extra touch with some in the industry. I highly recommend these guys for any of your carpentry needs!!!"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Yes, electricians must be licensed, certified, and in most cases, insured. Licensing requirements vary by state and local municipality, but most U.S. municipalities require electricians to hold an electrical contractor’s license. It's always a good practice to confirm requirements with your local municipality. Even if licensing is not required in your area, hiring a licensed and experienced electrician often leads to a better end result.

A license is a legal requirement to operate a business and is necessary for pulling project permits. Certifications, on the other hand, are typically voluntary and demonstrate a certain level of expertise. In some cases, a certified electrician may send an apprentice or journeyman to perform the work, but they must operate under a primary electrician who holds the proper license.

Before hiring, you should verify the electrician's license, insurance coverage, and any third-party certifications. You can use Angi’s contractor licensing search to confirm a pro's license status. Additionally, businesses with the “Angi Approved” badge on our platform meet strict criteria, including having the required state and local licenses, passing a background check, and maintaining a high average rating.

A correctly installed 3-way switch will not trip a breaker. If using a 3-way switch trips your circuit breaker, the ground wire might be touching something it should not be, there could be a short in the wiring, a wire could be loose, or the wrong wires are connected to the wrong locations on the switch. If you cannot easily see the problem, such as a loose wire, contact an electrician to fix the issue.

Yes, blue wires can be hot wires in the U.S. However, they are less common in residential properties than red and black hot wires. Blue wires are typically used as traveler wires in three-way and four-way switches, as well as ceiling fans. They allow fixtures to be controlled by multiple switches, like when there are switches at the top and bottom of a staircase for the same light.

No, sconces don’t have to be hardwired, but they can be for a more permanent solution. Sconces come in various styles, sizes, and finishes as well as types of installation. Plug-in wall sconces can be plugged into a nearby outlet, and battery-powered sconces can be mounted to the wall.

Wiring can last anywhere from 50 to 70 years, but all kinds of mishaps can occur that reduce the lifespan of your electrical wiring, including severe weather conditions, pests, and even faulty wiring. Keeping a preventative maintenance scheduling and hiring an electrician for an annual electrical inspection will keep your wiring system around for as long as possible.
