If your basement often leaks after heavy rain, it’s probably caused by hydrostatic pressure. When the ground is saturated with water, it can put pressure on the exterior of your home’s foundation, causing cracks in the basement wall and pushing water through any existing weak spots. Over time, hydrostatic pressure can cause structural damage to your home.

Inspect regularly for clogs, clean drain lines, and ensure grading directs water away from the foundation.

French drains and footing drains are virtually identical, except that French drains sit a foot or two beneath the ground, and footing drains sit as deep as your foundation footings go, sometimes up to 10 feet. Both drainage systems collect water before it reaches the soil around your foundation and divert it to a safe place on your property for disposal.

The amount of soil you’ll need around your foundation depends on a variety of factors, but in general, you want a 6-inch decline over the first 10 feet extending out from your foundation. How much soil it will take to achieve that will depend on the current grade of the yard, how much foundation is exposed, and the size of your home.

Some natural springs can dry up, but it’s far from inevitable. In the right conditions, a spring will continue flowing with water. Certain environmental or manufactured factors can threaten a natural spring, however. Hotter temperatures and decreased rainfall can cause a spring to dry up over time, especially in arid places. The same is true if you use spring water for drinking or irrigation faster than the groundwater replacement rate. Keep in mind that there are intermittent springs, which are active on and off throughout the year. They haven’t dried up; it’s all part of a natural water cycle.
