"I have used Newcomb Tree Service several times in the past and have been pleased with their work. When I used them in 2017 and 2018 they did great work and gave a fair and reasonable price. I called them in March of 2022 for an estimate to take down several large pine trees and a few other small trees. The gentleman that came to my house was pleasant, but the estimate was ridiculously high. The estimate was twice what I paid them back in 2018 and that was for taking down half the amount of trees. I had another tree service company come out to give a quote and it was for half the price as Newcomb. Needless to say I went with the other company. Newcomb did great work for me years ago and I believe they would have done good work this time around, but their pricing seems to have changed. If you get an estimate from Newcomb, just make sure you are getting a few other comparison estimates."

"A superior job on my rundown yard that due to my illness had not been taken care of in several years. They cut back my bushes, cleaned and mulched my flower beds. The beds were so covered in weed you couldn't tell where the flower plants were. After the beautiful care they gave I even had some flowers bloom that I hadn't seen in a couple of years. These guys are awesome. I want them to help with my upgrade for the future. Thanks so much guys! I highly recommend them!!!"

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

Generally, avoid trimming trees in the summer (with the exception of pruning fruit trees as needed). Trees use a lot of energy in the summer, most of which is relegated to new growth. If you chop it too early, you could stunt the next season's growth. Again, when in doubt, do some research based on the specific tree type.

A dead tree should always be cut down, because it could fall and cause injuries or damage, and it can also attract insects like carpenter ants. A tree that’s diseased beyond repair should also be cut down, but it’s not always easy for a homeowner to tell. Signs of disease include dying branches, a hollow trunk, leaning, and discolored or missing leaves, but your best bet is to hire a local arborist who can evaluate the tree and tell you if it can be saved or should be cut down.

Generally, no, tree topping isn’t a good technique, and you should avoid using it in most cases. Tree topping may be the only good option to save a tree following severe damage after a storm, but in most other cases, it’s not the right choice. Tree topping can leave trees vulnerable to disease and further damage, and most pros will suggest against it.

Since overwatering can harm mature trees just as much as a lack of water, it’s important to know the signs of an overwatered tree. If your tree’s leaves are yellowing, wilting, or dropping leaves, it’s likely that you’re overwatering. Other common signs include rotting, fungi, soggy soil, soft or peeling bark, falling leaves, and brittle roots.

If you realize that you’ve been overwatering your mature tree, stop watering and give the soil time to dry out. Then moving forward, increase time between watering sessions.

Bradford pear trees bloom in early spring with small white flowers. They typically flower for at least two weeks. In bloom, these trees often emit a foul-smelling odor that’s often compared to rotting fish. Bradford pear trees will sometimes bloom in the fall due to drought or other stress-inducing conditions.
