"Brian is a fantastic plumber! He discovered the problem with both leaky sinks and fixed them perfectly! We thought the water was dripping from one area and he discovered it was leaking in 2 places. He showed up on time, was super friendly and cleaned up after he was finished. I highly recommend Brian at Wilmington Roto Rooter!"

"I hired Original Cape Fear Rooter because I smelled sewer gas. It turned out to be a very simple fix. I asked if I was paying for an hour because I had other things he could do. He quickly said “ what do you have” and for the same visit fee, he installed the new garbage disposal I had and replaced a part in my master bath sink. I just had a small fee for the part I needed for my sink. I only wish I remembered the new shower head that I needed to install! I highly recommend them."

"I had started a landscaping project in my front yard to remove rocks from my flower beds provided by the previous owner and needed my utilities marked. The sewer line in the yard is apparently considered a "private line" so I needed to find a private business to find and mark it. My family always has used Cape Fear Rooter for plumbing stuff, and I wasn't sure if they did that type of thing or not. I called them on 3/21, and they said yes! They asked me when I needed it by. I asked them to come on 3/22 if possible. They said ok and provided me with a 45 minute phone call in advance of arrival since I work from home. Upon arrival, they quickly got to work. They spray painted with a water soluble paint dashes of where my sewer line was in my entire front yard. They were very knowledgeable and trustworthy. I felt comfortable enough with them to just leave the check on the front porch table in advance after greeting them so I could continue working inside. When I went outside to check where the line was, I saw they had left the receipt in the place of the check. The owners and employee were very professional, friendly, and efficient."

Sewer Cleaning questions, answered by experts

The best drain cleaners are biodegradable ones or a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. Strong, caustic chemicals may seem appealing with promises of unclogging your drain quickly, but liquid drain cleaners can cause damage to your pipes over time. Consider making your own drain cleaner with baking soda and vinegar.

Toilet paper is the only material that you should flush down toilets. Other items like wipes, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, dental floss, and medications should be disposed of in the trash. Flushing these items can lead to plumbing issues and damage to sewage systems. Grease and cooking oils should also be avoided as they can solidify in pipes, causing blockages. Proper disposal helps prevent clogs and ensures the efficient operation of wastewater treatment systems while protecting the environment.

Yes, sewage smells can originate from a floor drain. If the P-Trap in the floor drain dries out or if there's a clog or other issue in the plumbing system, sewer gasses can escape through the drain, causing nasty odors. Regularly pouring water into the drain helps maintain the water seal and prevent those smells, but if the smell persists, you should have a plumbing professional inspect the drain for potential problems.

If used correctly and sparingly, root killer shouldn’t damage your pipes. Make sure to follow the instructions on the back of the bottle or the company’s website to avoid any unintended damages. However, when it comes to copper sulfate, it’s better to avoid it. This type of root killer can damage your plumbing and the surrounding environment.

It is generally safe to stay in a house that smells like sewage for a short time, but you should get the problem fixed as soon as possible. While the level of sewer gas is usually low enough to only cause minor symptoms, prolonged inhalation can lead to headaches, nausea, or respiratory irritation. High levels of gas exposure can be more dangerous, and high concentrations of methane—a component of sewer gas—can pose an explosion risk in enclosed spaces. If you smell sewer gas in your home, ventilate the area and call a professional to locate, assess, and fix the problem, as it will not go away on its own.
