"Came home from out of town for a week to NO HEAT in house. Immediately started making calls trying to find someone to make a service call. All we could do was leave messages. First person called us back couldn’t come out for until next week. We like to use local businesses, and remembered seeing the BUSTLE HEATING and COOLING truck parked at the house near where we live. So we left them a message too. Within 30 minutes we received a callback. They were sorry they couldn’t get to us that day, but put us on the schedule for the next day (today)! Gas Logs questions, answered by experts

In most cases, yes, it’s safe to light a gas water heater manually, but you should shut the gas off first, open a window, and let the space air out for about 10 minutes. Modern water heaters shut the gas off entirely if the pilot light goes out, but airing out the area beforehand is good practice and will ensure it’s safe to relight your pilot light manually. Just make sure you turn the gas valve to “pilot” before lighting. If the light keeps going out or won’t light at all, call in a professional.

Propane is more cost-efficient than natural gas on a per-unit basis because it produces twice as much heat energy as an equivalent amount of natural gas. But propane is not ideal if you already have a gas line installed. The best choice for your home depends on the efficiency of your appliances and the amount of installation required of your fuel choice.

There isn’t a way to convert electric fireplaces easily or cheaply to gas. The process requires major renovations, as opposed to wood fireplaces, which are often already vented and have space for the gas-burning equipment. To convert an electric fireplace to gas, you’d need to remove your old fireplace and get a completely new install.

When hiring a plumber to install or repair gas pipes, consider asking them the following questions: 

  • Do you have insurance and a professional license to do the job? 

  • How long will the project take to complete? 

  • Will I need to hire additional professionals for excavation or landscaping? 

  • Do you have references from previous clients? 

  • Do you belong to any relevant trade associations? 

The best sealant for gas pipes is usually a pipe joint compound, or pipe dope. It creates a durable, leak-proof seal that is resistant to high pressure and vibrations, and it doesn’t break down like tape can. Yellow Teflon tape, or PTFE tape, can also be a good option and is a safe and reliable sealant for gas pipes when you or a pro apply it correctly.
