"I hired Caleb McGalliard, owner and operator of Innovation Renovation to put together a dozen glass bookcases and build a bookcase base for them to sit on. I asked him to make sure the lights in the glass cases could all be turned on at once with one remote. Caleb had a positive attitude and explained how he would carry out this project, how long it would take and how much it would cost. Caleb's prices are about the same as other contractors I have consulted in the past or maybe a little more, but he warrants his prices. I was astounded at his skill set and the quality of his work was clearly his number one goal."

"He is honest, prompt, and is meticulous about what he does. He is very careful and does everything in a nice manner. He sticks with us until he has finished and I am satisfied. His prices were reasonable. He continues to do the job until he does it right. He is very responsive. He is very punctual and if he is going to be late, he calls and lets you know. He is very professional. If I have anything to be done anytime, I would rely on him. It is nice to have somebody like him to help. He is going to fix the garage door for me soon. When I met him he was doing work for another house in the neighborhood and I decided to use him since my brother-in-law- was moving in close by. He did things for him and then helped me. He has not given me a quote for that work, but he has been reasonable in everything he has done."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Most of the time, you’ll want to use screws on your subfloor rather than nails. Nails can actually weaken plywood, whereas screws can easily penetrate without damage. They also form a more secure connection because of their shape, preventing squeaky floors and tightly holding the subfloor in place. That said, some contractors do prefer nails depending on the type of floor covering because they allow for more flexibility.

Bump-out additions can extend anywhere from 2 to 15 feet from an existing room. The right size will depend on how you plan to use the new space. For a cantilever bump-out, which doesn't require additional foundation support, the limit is typically 24 inches (2 feet). If a footing and foundation are part of the project, a bump-out can be much larger, even encompassing a whole room. It's also important to remember that many residential properties have limits on the total house size relative to the lot size.

House framing can be expensive because the materials are pricey, and the job requires a high level of expertise. The more complex the plans, the more expensive the job, but even the most basic frame needs to be installed with high-quality materials and precision. When pricing your home’s framework, remember that a sturdy frame is necessary to create a safe structure.

When hanging a door frame, it’s recommended that you use screws, not nails. Screws are more secure, easier to tighten, and easier to remove if you need to adjust the frame. On average, the cost to replace a door frame is about $400, but you can save on labor costs if you’re confident in your ability to DIY the project.

In framing, studs are placed at 16-inch intervals to coincide with the typical spacing of wall materials such as drywall or plywood. This spacing is called "on-center" and is necessary for maintaining structural stability and efficient use of materials. The 16-inch spacing also helps to distribute the weight evenly across the building's structure. For those looking to cut material costs and improve energy efficiency, 24-inch stud spacing can be employed through a method called "advanced framing". This requires careful planning and adherence to local building codes to ensure structural integrity.
