"Groom & Bloom exceeded every expectation. They donated their services to remove six large trees for our community garden, making way for a new parking area and the future Kiwanis Education Pavilion. Their team was professional, efficient, and handled everything with precision and care. What truly stands out is their commitment to the community. This wasn’t just a job. It was an investment in something bigger. If you want a company that delivers quality work with integrity and heart, Groom & Bloom is the one to call. Highly recommend."

Customers say: Quality work

"We own a beach house on North Top Sail Island, N.C. Hurricane Florence badly damaged the place. We hired Colley Construction to make repairs, it quickly became apparent that there were severe structural issues in the house framework and support beams in addition to all the hurricane damage. Mike and his crew effectively rebuilt the entire house, all exterior walls had to be torn out, ledger boards replaced, floor joists replaced, new DP50 (hurricane) windows and insulated siding installed, new decks and stairs, all exterior doors, vinyl tile floors, bathroom toilets, showers and vanities. We also had to have the kitchen area rebuilt, we replaced the electric stove with gas at the request of my wife and also had quartz counter top installed, new dish washer, fridge and built in microwave. Mike Colley also acted as general contractor for some jobs that required specialists such as drywall finishing. Thru out the re-building process which took about 5 months to complete, Mike kept me informed and supplied me with many dozens of pictures of before and after work and I felt well-informed, (even though I was 600 miles away) as to what was done to the house to get it back into shape. In fact, it is much stronger and storm resistant than before. Mike also made suggestions which greatly improved the appearance of the underside of the house by installing white soffit underneath and painting the pilings. Mike also installed what looks like bridge piers mounted on concrete under the outside stairways for added stability. When ever there was a question about what building materials to use or construction approach I told Mike to use the best practice, and he did. Now we have a beach house that is both beautiful and solid. I am glad we had such a good contractor to restore our home, lasting thanks to Mike, Mason and Joey and the crew who delivered us from this disaster."

"I called Jonathon for an estimate after initially hiring someone else to do the job. The previous person started working on my yard seven weeks prior (still wasn't finished) and the patio/yard was a disaster. Jonathon came out the following day and got me on the schedule within a couple of weeks. He and his staff had to completely redo what had been done and they completed the work in less than two days (patio and plants). They were professional, efficient and communicated with me throughout the process. I immediately recommended him to my neighbor who hired him as well. I wish I had hired him initially as he was a pleasure to work with and did an excellent job!"

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Generally, no, tree topping isn’t a good technique, and you should avoid using it in most cases. Tree topping may be the only good option to save a tree following severe damage after a storm, but in most other cases, it’s not the right choice. Tree topping can leave trees vulnerable to disease and further damage, and most pros will suggest against it.

If you’re buying a small tree with lots of room to grow, expect to pay around $100 to $200 for a potted version. But if you’re buying a larger tree—say one over 10 feet—prices rise, starting in the $500 to $600 range and increasing quickly from there. Keep in mind that paying for professional palm tree planting or transplanting services will increase the cost.

For Bradford pears, damage from storms is common, and if the trunk splits, it can pose a danger to people and surrounding structures. The best thing to do in that instance is to have the tree removed. If there’s only minor damage to the branches, pruning away the damaged parts is the first order of business. You may also want to consult a professional arborist to make sure the tree is healthy.

Before you cut down a dead palm tree, try to revive it using the methods listed above. However, there are instances when it makes sense to remove a dead palm tree, including:

  • The heavily infected tree will infect nearby trees, bushes, and plants.

  • The palm’s roots are overtaking your yard, foundation, and sidewalk and causing structural damage.

  • The tree is unstable and a hazard to your property, your neighbor’s property, and pedestrians.

In general, trees should be planted no closer than 15 to 20 feet from your foundation. For larger trees with far-reaching roots like maples, oaks, or poplars, a good guide is to plant as many feet from your home as the tree’s height is expected to reach at maturity. Some trees, like elms and willows, should only be planted far from where their roots may encounter sewer or water lines.
