"The whole job went exceedingly well. Matt was particularly helpful in helping us decide exactly what we wanted to do and made several changes that we decided on in mid-job without complaint or question. The job went quickly and every part of it was completed professionally. We had S & S replace our windows several years again with similar excellent results and they stand behind their work and products. We highly recommend them!"

"Professional. Friendly. Knowledgeable. Patient. Goes beyond. Out of the three estimates I was given, this was the only company that offered me more than just pop-out and pop-in new windows. They actually looked at what I had and envisioned an affordable, more aesthetically-pleasing look for my little house. I have never been excited over windows before, nor realized how a change in the layout can affect its appearance. I definitely recommend them. I only gave them a 4.5 for work quality, because one of the windows were mis-measured and had to be reordered. Otherwise 5s all the way!"

"We hired Matt to tear out old hardwood flooring in our kitchen and install new laminate wood flooring in place of it. From start to finish, he did an excellent job. He was very thorough and detailed in the work that he did. His price was also fair and competitive. We would definitely hire Matt again for other projects at our home and we highly recommend him to anyone looking for a great contractor to work with."

"Highly recommend Tar Heel Basement Systems - We were lucky to find them to do our crawl space repair. Edward Greene, Micah Miller, & Tim Everhart from the Winston Salem NC location did an amazing job on our crawl space. These folks are the kind of contractors that one dreams of finding! I wish I had another crawl space for them to do. These gentlemen were extremely knowledgeable of the task at hand and made sure everything was completed to perfection. They went over and above on every task performed. If I could rate them a 10 that’d really describe the quality of their work."

Window Door Contractors questions, answered by experts

Most window screens in residential homes are designed to be removed from the inside, especially with double-hung, single-hung, and casement styles. That said, some setups require exterior removal. Older homes or custom installs may have exterior clips or brackets, and sunscreens are almost always mounted on the outside. Before removing your window screen, look at how it is held in place.

Some hardware or specialty window stores in your area may repair damaged screens, but it’s less time-consuming, more convenient, and potentially more affordable to hire a screen repair technician to come to your home to do the work on-site. The screen technician will have the tools and experience to get the work done the same day, and they can inspect other screens while there to help avoid repeat repair costs in the future.

Many kinds of window screens, such as solar screens, are designed to reduce the amount of harmful ultraviolet rays that pass through them and enter your home. The materials typically have UV-blocking properties. However, they may not completely eliminate all UV rays from passing through your home. Different window screens are designed for different purposes, and not all are designed to block or reduce UV rays. Do your research to make sure you’re getting the type of window screen to suit your needs.

Awning windows can have screens, but it depends on your manufacturer. If your awning window does have a screen, it will be on the interior side so it doesn’t get in the way when you crank the window open. Having the screen on the inner part of the window also makes it easier to clean from inside your home.

There are a number of ways to secure windows. You can add motion detectors or window sensors to detect movement and impact or change the window locks to make them stronger. Some of the ways you can secure windows are much like how you secure a home: closing the curtains at night and setting up security cameras outside so you can monitor your property even in your absence.
