"The company (Sean) did a pre-drywall inspection on our new home. He was particular and detailed in his inspection. He included pictures of every area that needed attention, which helped immensely. That gave the builder something to go by and me something to compare when corrected. He also had a drone so he could check the roof. After the inspection, I contacted Sean and asked if he had time to explain at 8:00pm because I had to wait until my husband was home and he accepted. On the call he took his time and explained all he found and answered all our questions. I will definitely use Sean again and refer him to others. I have several friends who are realtors and I will definitely pass his information to them. "

IES, Inc., is locally owned and has been in business for 23 years. Steve McLeod and Lori Medlin are the owners. Mr. McLeod has been in the business of building science for 25 years; he has two patent pending products and is the creator of the EcoSmartCarbon Furnace Filter. IES, currently has 14 employees. IES is an approved contractor for Duke Energy Progress & Advanced Energy. IES is a member of the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce. Our EcoSmart products and services make your home more energy efficient, with improved air quality, reduced carbon footprint and improved resale value. IES provides energy audits, air quality assessments, and EcoSmart Products and Services. IES provides mold remediation, lead abatement, and radon mitigation. IES installs breakthrough technology with radiant barrier crawl spaces and attics. IES is exclusive dealer for CleanSeal; non-toxic mold coating, which has a life time warranty. IES can retrofit your home to make it more energy efficient, with improved air and water quality.

"If I could I would give this company 0 stars. They are not honest and totally misrepresent their work in a highly unethical, illegal manner. They utilize fear mongering sales tactics to rope you in and charge astronomical prices for work that they do (in reality don't do). They are very good at this shady sales tactic. We contracted with Indoor Environmental Systems (IES) for several projects and ended paying almost $100,000 when all was said and done. Because of the issues we have experienced as detailed below, I am going to utilize an independent inspector to review all of the work that IES has done for us to make sure the rest is legit, safe and performed as contracts indicate. One of the projects was for 'Closed Crawl Space Repairs'. The scope of work detailed: Ground & foundation walls covered using insulation liner; Foam/foil (150mil) radiant barrier - Provides moisture, radon & temperature control. The main intent for these repairs was to eliminate (at the least reduce) radon. The IES salesman indicated that their process will 'most likely eliminate the radon completely' but that there was a small chance it would not and in that case we would need to contact a radon mitigation company. The completed work had zero impact on the radon levels, so I reached out to a radon mitigation company. They came and did their inspection and informed me the product used by IES is not safe for crawlspaces and does nothing to help with the control of radon. Not only is it highly flammable (they showed me by holding a lighter up to the material and it instantly combusted) but is also against building code ASTE E1745-11 CLASS A, B, C. I contacted IES with this information and was provided with a link to a general product page [*** Link removed ***] by the owner Stephen McLeoud. Nowhere on this page, or any of the specific product detail pages is there any mention of radon, let alone being able to control radon as the scope of work indicates. In a very poor attempt to further divert from being held responsible/liable, Mr. McLeoud also sent me this link: [*** Link removed ***] He stated, "When reviewing the HOW TO INSULATE A CRAWL SPACE refer to Benefits of Prodex Total Insulation In Crawlspaces, find #7 which states radon resistant." This link talks about sealing the ceiling with the product that was used, however our ceiling wasn't sealed. And using Prodex Total Under Concrete for the floors, which wasn't used on our project and is specific for being used under concrete slabs. Therefore, the statement of being radon resistant is false. Important to note that I tried contacting insulation4less.com (sole distributor of the product used) multiple times over several days to get feedback from them. It went straight to some sketch voicemail every time and I have yet to receive any call back. I even tried to contact the product manufacturer and their phone number is disconnected, and their is no email address on the website. Crazy..."

Radon Detection and Reduction questions, answered by experts

The soil beneath your house is most likely what’s causing an increased level of radon. This is because soil holds radioactivity for a long time and it’s also what most buildings are built on. Another common source of radon is water from a source that hasn’t been through periodic radon tests, such as well water. Over time, the radon from the soil can inhabit other parts of your house like the foundation or plumbing.

It is possible to test for radon yourself using DIY radon test kits, but these at-home test kits should never be a replacement for professional radon testing. DIY test kits can provide some information about radon exposure in your house, but your indoor temperature and humidity can affect the results, as can improper usage of the test kit. You could save yourself some money by hiring a radon professional to begin with, and when it comes to your family’s safety, hiring an experienced professional to do the testing is usually the best option.

A DIY kit can lessen the sting that comes with paying for a professional assessment, but these comprehensive tests are true lifesavers. Inspectors are more likely to catch all of the pollutants and hazards in your air. Plus, you’ll still need a professional to verify and act on your DIY test results.

Some kits don’t include tests for certain air pollutants or only detect their presence, but not their levels (i.e., mold spores). If you’re willing to shell out money for a DIY kit, it’s usually better to stretch your budget slightly higher for a more detailed assessment.

You should have a professional test for radon every two to five years. A good rule of thumb is to get testing done every five years if you’ve never had an issue before and every two years if you have. You may also want to schedule testing if you notice symptoms of radon exposure or if you do intermittent DIY radon testing and notice changes in your levels between tests. If you have an active radon monitor, you can schedule testing if you notice levels increasing over time.

The short answer is no, air purifiers do not help with radon. While they certainly can improve the air quality of your home, they only clean pollutants from the air. Radon is radioactive, and it isn’t affected by the same filtration systems that handle other airborne particles, like dust and mold. The only thing that works is a radon mitigation system.
