"Phipps Masonry repaired the brick of our front entrance and front porch. They were professional, timely, undertook great work product, did a good job communicating the finding of another masonry issue for us to consider, and left the job site in good shape. I highly recommend Phipps."

"Adam was a pleasure to work with. He drew up the plans himself and met with us before starting the project to make sure we were all on the same page. His workers were very efficient and thorough. The quality of work completed was exceptional and we couldn't be happier with our pavers/walkway. His team was very professional and clean. The project didn't drag out, they came in and worked every day until the project was complete. They also cleaned up after themselves every night so we didn't come home to a mess. We had three different companies come out and give us a quote for the same project and Adams price was competitive and the quality of work far exceeded our expectations. Save yourself the time and look no further for any hardscaping work you are looking to have done."

"After getting 3 estimates Clean Cuts was the most detailed and best value by far. Very friendly and easy to work with. I had a retaining wall built and filled in with dirt and pavers layed on top to create a patio out my back door. Very slopped and unusable space. They had great ideals and beautiful material. Very pleased with the quality of the finished product. Receiving a lot of complements and turned the area into a wonderful space to use and enjoy."

"Jerry Dunlap returned our call within 24 hours and made an appointment within 3 days. He gave us a written estimate with the job details and then reviewed the job details with us. We put a 50% deposit down for work, after he gave us an estimated completion date of within 3 days. He came to the job site exactly when he said he would come. This job required hand wheel-barrowing 3 yards of concrete to the back porch and finishing the concrete with a brush finish. They put an expansion joint around the enclosed patio and plastic up the walls so the concrete would not make a mess on the walls. Dunlap Brothers is a family owned business that takes great pride in their work and sincerely want you to be happy with their work from estimation to installation. We love our new patio and look forward to enjoying it this summer."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can technically use a pressure washer to remove paint from brick, but it comes with a significant risk of damaging the brick surface. A high-power pressure washer can be fast but may leave the brick looking unsightly. The recommended method is to first apply a chemical paint stripper, following the product's instructions, and then use a stiff metal bristle brush or a pressure washer on a low-pressure setting to remove the loosened paint. Due to the risk of damage, it is often best to hire a professional who can use low-stress methods.

Brick stain doesn’t peel or chip and is much more durable than painting. That’s because the staining is absorbed into the brick instead of lingering on the surface as paint does. The color retains even under extreme weather conditions. Therefore, brick stain will save you a lot of time and cost on maintenance in the long run.

Brick houses can last at least 100 years with minimal maintenance. With regular care and attention, including mortar repointing, brick houses can last 500 years or more.

You will repoint over a fraction of the old mortar, but you should scrape away 1/2 to 1 inch of mortar from the joints before repointing. Otherwise, the repointing is only masking the weakened mortar instead of actually replacing it, which could put your chimney at risk of bigger, more expensive damages later on.

Drilling into brick doesn’t have to be a dangerous project if you prep and approach it with the right tools and techniques, but it does come with risks if it’s not done correctly. It can lead to significant issues, such as damaging the brick or affecting the wall’s structural integrity. Applying too much force can crack or chip the brick, while incorrect placement might compromise its load-bearing strength.
