"I hired CGA electric to perform some electrical work in my home as a part of a kitchen remodel. Their job was to remove six power outlets and their associated junction boxes from my kitchen walls and rewire the kitchen to provide power to the lower kitchen cabinets so that the removed power outlets could be replaced by under-cabinet power strips. Replacing two circuit breakers was also included. CGA Electric did an excellent job, and, importantly, did not leave behind any damage to the premises. I'd highly recommend them to others and will certainly keep them in mind for any future electrical work."

GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, a standard safety addition to home power outlets. In rooms where moisture is more likely, like the bathroom and kitchen, GFCI outlets stop the current when certain kinds of shorts are detected, preventing shocks. Both GFCI and the similar AFCI (Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets are polarized and have clear indicators on the receptacle where hot wiring should go.

With AC wiring, which is the kind most likely you’ll find at home, the black wire is “hot,” and the white is “neutral.” The bare or green wire is considered the safety ground wire. If you encounter DC wiring, it’s relatively easy to tell positive or negative wires apart. red wires are used to indicate positive voltage and black wires indicate negative voltage.

A correctly installed 3-way switch will not trip a breaker. If using a 3-way switch trips your circuit breaker, the ground wire might be touching something it should not be, there could be a short in the wiring, a wire could be loose, or the wrong wires are connected to the wrong locations on the switch.
