"I went online at 1:00 AM and got an immediate response from Branagan's Metal Works. I read the email and went to sleep. I texted Mr Branagan at about 12:30 PM and he said that he would be at my house to pick up the piece that I needed repaired. By 6:30 that evening Mr Branagan had the piece repaired and delivered back to me. This was an exceptional service. The piece looks brand new and works very well. I would recommend Branagan's Metal Works to anyone that needs any welding done. It was really a great experience, and I am very grateful for his exceptional work."

Small jobs welcome

"I needed entry railings at the front porch of my 60 year old home. Kevin gave me a quick estimate, adapted the railings to my slightly uneven porch, and completed the job cleanly and in the agreed upon time. I have recommended him to a relative who also needs metal railings at his home entrance. I wouldn’t hesitate to use this company again."

Small jobs welcome

"Mr. Sheppard is a very professional and methodical welder with a clean and organized shop. This is reflected in the high quality of his precision work. His welding equipment is modern and capable of executing jobs in TIG, MIG, and Stick welding in various metals at his shop or on site. This provides good flexibility to attend to simple jobs as well as the more complex ones like mine. He worked very well with me (I am a retired Mechanical Engineer) on a delicate project involving welds in a structural 316 stainless steel assembly subject to a corrosion environment. The quality and temperature management of his beads on 316 stainless using TIG speaks volumes of his ample experience and knowledge with this difficult metal. Communication was superb, and his willingness to work and deliver during the weekend was another plus to his service. His price was in line with internet estimates for this project. I highly recommend Mr. Sheppard for any welding job!"

Welding questions, answered by experts

Welding is the process of using extreme heat—and, sometimes, pressure—to attach two pieces of metal. In contrast, metal fabrication is a more involved process that can include welding, sheet metal work, bending, and other forms of metal manipulation. Metal fabrication is a large-scale project that may or may not involve welding, while welding is more often a step in larger fabrication projects.

There are a few things you can ask welders before you hire them to get an idea of their experience and ability levels:

  • Are you licensed and certified?

  • How long have you been in the welding business?

  • Do you commonly do the type of welding I need?

  • Do you offer any kind of warranty for your work?

  • Do you charge by the hour or by the project?

  • How long do you expect my welding project to take?

  • What steps do you take to minimize errors in your work?

Professional metal fabricators typically charge around $70 per hour, but the total cost of your project will depend on several factors. The largest cost drivers are the size, complexity, and design of the project, as well as the price and type of metal used. A good way to estimate the total cost is to multiply the cost of raw materials by four; typically, one-quarter of the total goes toward materials and three-quarters toward labor. Your geographic location can also influence costs, as labor and material prices vary by region.

The best thing to cut metal pipe is a durable pipe cutter that is made for metal. You may want to measure the diameter of the pipes before purchasing a pipe cutter to ensure it will be able to cut your metal pipes. Opt for a heavy-duty option to cut through metal like steel or cast iron.

The average cost for a welding project is about $300, with typical costs ranging from $125 to $490. However, prices can be as low as $125 for very small jobs or exceed $1,200 for large or complex projects. Welders typically charge an hourly rate between $65 and $150, depending on their experience, and many charge a minimum fee to cover overhead and travel expenses. The total cost is influenced by several factors, including labor, the cost of materials like metal rods and shielding gas, the type of metal being welded, the project's size and complexity, and your geographic location. For a precise quote, it's best to ask a local welder for an estimate based on your specific project.
