"I had two trees fall on my detached garage and destroy it. They demolished what was left. The items that could be saved were stored in a POD until it could be rebuilt. They did an amazing job rebuilding it. It looks better than it ever did. Also they helped me deal with the insurance company which saved me a major headache. I would recommend this company to anyone wanting a great job done. You don’t have to deal with multiple contractors they take care of everything"

"When I decided to move ahead on a much needed roof removal and replacement, it was very hard to get anyone to respond. However, Michael was very quick to answer my call and get a quote. Eventually I was able to get quotes from 3 different contractors and they were all within $200 for each other, which I find amazing given it was a sizeable job. In the end I did not select American, only because they did not carry workers comp at the time. I understand they have since picked up workers comp. I do most home projects on my own but can't do it all on my own. I will certainly contact Michael for anything in the future I decide to hire out."
"I bought this deal of 149 for 6 hour rotten repair and Jeff contacted me as soon as I bought it. He came in time the next day and did whole estimate for the jobs (1200+this deal). He wrote a proposal about the jobs, which made me think he was professional. He told me this would cost 2.5 days to finish and he would come here at the first day to guide his workers where need to repair, and charge me additional 1200 dollars so I originally thought this was reasonable. However, on the day of service, he didn't show up. Only his workers came in and asked me about where need to repair. At that time I began to confuse since I am not a good memory person as well as not a contractor, how can I remember all the details about the jobs. So I have to use my previous inspection report as a guide for them. OH EXCUSE ME!!! I really don't know how other contractors do this work but this makes me feel really bad. I have to stay at home all days to be a contractor. Then, the workers checked the parts I showed them and told me some rotten wood cannot be replaced and can only be repaired with some material, which was stated 'REPLACE' in Jeff's proposal. This would make labor time much shorter, so I called Jeff about this as well as if he would come that day. At first Jeff said he would come at some time, but then since the labor time is shorter, I want to argue the total cost he proposed. He became really RUDE and SHUT DOWN PHONE directly. And these two days, he never showed up again or call. This is the first time I met such rude response. On the other hands, the two workers are really professional and do the jobs in a good quality. In the end, the total working time is 9.5 hours plus 3 hours material purchase time. Only half of Jeff's proposed time. I am not a emotional person so I would not give all F rating for him. His workers are good and arrive in time everyday, however, this company owner is really really NOT PROFESSIONAL. Before I bought this deal, I found previous rating are not good for this company but I didn't trust that since reviews might be from their competitors' attack. Now I understand I should trust reviews and ratings.
We recently purchased a 2nd home on Lake James with an exterior that is 100% cedar. The exterior was in serious need of cleaning and re-staining. It had not been maintained; and, had a significant amount of mold staining and several areas of the trim had the original finish peeling off.
We contracted with Mike and Crystal to prep and re-stain the exterior of our home. Throughout the process, Mike demonstrated thoroughness, competency and responsibility. Mike and Crystal took personal responsibility to ensure they delivered a quality product. Mike kept his commitments and did not compromise his work product even when faced with the stripping process taking more time than he expected. He completed the project per the schedule he committed.
Mike demonstrated a high attention to detail in the finishing process and ensured the project was completed to my satisfaction. The home looks beautiful...we could not be happier.
I solicited bids from several paint contractors and evaluated several before selecting Mike. His pricing was very competitive versus several other contractors; but, I never observed where Mike cut corners.
I would definitely recommend MIke's Painting and will plan to use Mike again when we have painting needs.
"When we decided to redo our kitchen in April of 2012, we knew what we wanted fixed, our budget and that's about it. We started talking to contractors, kitchen design centers and researching ideas. We quickly realized we were in WAY over our heads. A lot of places offer free design services if you buy all of your materials through them. We didn't want to be tied down. We didn't want a complete tear down to the studs, either. Homemade Design to the rescue! First of all the price was an absolute steal for the service provided. Amanda and co. Listened to what we wanted and came up with inovative, functional and beautiful solutions. Our house is old. We wanted to keep that 1920s feel, but still have a dishwasher, granite countertops and stainless appliances! Amanda had the brilliant idea of only replacing the bottom cabinets. She also gave me excellent instructions on how to refinish my existing cabinets so they look like new. This was a perfect solution for US. Homemade Design gave us ideas for layout, cabinets, lighting, wall paint, appliances, furniture, countertops, backsplash, faucets, sink, and cusions for built in. She would have recommended flooring if we wanted, but we didn't. Now, Amanda is more like a consultant...( I actually called her my kitchen remodel therapist). You still are ultimately responsible for the plan and what works for you. If your measurements are off (like mine were) that's on you. I was adament about no island and no microwave over the stove and so she didn't put those in the design. Some suggestions were not my style. And I said so. Honestly, if I picked out my own kitchen it would be so safe: white subway tile or something. Amanda gave me the guts to mix patterns and create something spectacular! It took almost a year to complete ( contractors fault) We did a lot of work ourselves. We bought the cabinets, backsplash tile, light fixtures, table and banquette cusions through Homemade Design at a great discount, we checked!! If you try shopping for any part of your kitchen, the volume of choices can be overwhelming. We loved having Amanda narrow it down for us. Communication was through email, mostly. She never took longer than three business days to respond to my million questions or concerns. Awesome. 5 months later, my kitchen is a dream come true. And I owe it all to Homemade Design! "
"Ken Werth went above and beyond to help us with several projects as we took on a new rental townhome in Kitty Hawk. His expertise and professionalism were top notch. His son was also very helpful. They were willing to help with whatever we had going on and offered advise based on experience we did not have with rental properties in Kitty Hawk. I highly recommend Ken Werth as a dependable, hard working, knowledgeable contractor who also works in construction. We appreciate his willingness hard work!"
Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts
House framing can be expensive because the materials are pricey, and the job requires a high level of expertise. The more complex the plans, the more expensive the job, but even the most basic frame needs to be installed with high-quality materials and precision. When pricing your home’s framework, remember that a sturdy frame is necessary to create a safe structure.
You may need a permit to install your window seat. Even though it's an indoor modification, some municipalities require permits for any built-ins added to homes. Check with your carpenter or, if you're DIY-ing, do some research on your city's requirements.
Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.
A few signs that you need a new door frame include:
The door no longer fits properly in its frame and sticks or scrapes.
You notice cracks, holes, or rotting.
You feel a draft coming from around the door when it’s closed.
You find yourself frequently needing to make repairs.
To calculate the number of linear feet of baseboard you’ll need, measure the length of each wall of the room you’re installing them in as close to the floor as possible, rounding up to the next full linear foot. If it’s your first DIY molding job, having a few extra feet on hand for miscuts is a good idea.
