Copper roof strips offer better coverage and more damage protection than zinc roof strips. Although both deter moss and algae growth, copper also offers UV protection. Zinc strips require more strips than copper to cover the roof’s surface area, which means more holes in your roof. Copper strips are also more flexible and last longer than zinc strips.

There are advantages and disadvantages to metal roofs in cold climates. Metal roofing stands up extremely well to harsh winters as long as it is properly insulated. Snow and ice slide right off residential metal roofs, preventing the formation of ice dams; but because of this, they may require snow guards, which prevent the ice and snow that slide off a roof from causing a sort of "mini avalanche" that can damage property and people below.

Metal shake roofs can last 50 to 75 years or more when properly maintained, compared to 20 to 40 years for a traditional asphalt shingle roof. Be sure to promptly repair damage and keep up with gutter maintenance to help extend the life of your metal roof.

24-gauge metal is thicker and will stand up better to impact, so it’s a better option for roofs that will see heavy snow and ice accumulation, hail storms, fallen tree debris, and blown debris. It’s a more expensive option, but it’s worth the added cost for roof longevity in extreme climates. If you live in a more moderate climate and don’t have trees overhanging your roof, 26-gauge metal is suitable and is a more affordable option.

The first thing to ensure is you are hiring an approved contractor to repair your roof so your insurance can cover the cost. As always, shop around until you have a handful of quotes so that you get the best quality for the price you’re paying.

When researching a roof repair contractor to repair hail damage, first ask if they’re licensed, bonded, and insured, as this protects you and your property. Always check upfront fees, availability, turnaround, and cost or discounts. Finally, I always look up their reviews to make sure other people who have done similar projects have had great results.
