"They kept us informed of any changes in schedule. Cleaned up, painted what we asked for and more. Fantastic job. Inside of house looked brand new. I arranged this long distance then went to house."

"James contacted me very shortly after I posted my contractor request, he came out the next day and did an estimate for me. This was at a time when I was calling other contractors who never even bothered to call back. Not only did James fix everything I needed done, but also a couple of items that I added on as well. James was also able to recommend other contractors such as painter's, carpenter's and tile and flooring contractors that I needed as well. James went well above and beyond to help me and was very professional. I highly recommend him to anyone!!!!"

Painting questions, answered by experts

If you don’t treat a cedar fence, it will turn from reddish brown to gray over time. You can keep the cedar from graying and retain its attractive, deep red color by sealing your cedar fence with a stain that keeps the wood’s oils in and serves as a barrier against the sun’s UV rays.

You can paint an old wooden fence, but make sure first to do a deep clean (ideally with a pressure washer) and inspect the fence for any existing damage. Painting over dirt and debris will cause your paint to peel. Once you’ve cleaned and repaired any minor issues, use a primer and high-quality satin paint.

Whether to brush or roll stain on wood depends on the project and your preference. Brushing is ideal for smaller, intricate areas and offers more control over the application, ensuring thorough coverage and penetration into the wood's grain.

Conversely, rolling is efficient for more extensive, flat surfaces and can save time. However, it is not always the best fit for textured or uneven wood. Some projects may benefit from combining both methods, using a brush for detail work and a roller for broader areas. Ultimately, the choice between brushing and rolling depends on the specific requirements of your staining project.

Yes, staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan, typically by five to 10 years. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it can still fall victim to moisture, sun exposure, and rot over time. Applying a treatment creates a protective shield that helps prevent splintering, fading, and decay, preserving the wood's strength and appearance. A combination stain and sealer often provides the best protection, as it soaks into the wood grain rather than just sitting on top. This offers superior defense against UV damage and rot and lasts longer than a sealer alone. To maintain the wood's natural look, consider using a near-translucent stain. You should plan to reapply the stain or sealer every two to three years.

Staining a wood fence isn’t guaranteed to prevent warping, but it can help. Plus, it’s a beginner-friendly DIY project that you can finish in a few days. If you want to try it, you’ll start by stripping it of any old stain or paint, then sanding it. After that, you’ll clean it and spot-treat any mold or mildew. When it’s dry, you can apply the stain.
