"Contacted Anthony and explained the problem I was having and he offered to come by and check to see if the septic was full or if it was a blocked pipe. When he arrived he accessed the tank and found the pipe into the tank was blocked. He corrected the issue and the pipe started flowing again. He had just finished a job and was on the way to another. I asked to be put on the list to have my tank pumped and he stated he would just do it now while already here. He completed the task quickly and was very reasonable on the price. Will continue to use his company for related issues. AJ"

Septic Tanks questions, answered by experts

Having a well means that a household’s water supply, including water that comes through faucets, showerheads, and appliances, is supplied through a private source rather than from a city. The well pulls fresh water from an underground water supply, such as an aquifer, and the well pump pushes the water from the well to your household.

Conventional anaerobic septic systems are the most cost-effective and least expensive type, with installation costs typically ranging from $3,000 to $8,000. For comparison, sand filter systems cost between $7,000 and $18,000, while mound systems are the most expensive at $10,000 to $20,000. Several factors influence the final price. The tank material is a key consideration; plastic tanks are the most budget-friendly option, starting around $2,900, but concrete and fiberglass tanks offer greater durability and longer life spans at a higher cost. The size of the tank also affects the price. For example, a 1,000-gallon tank costs between $900 and $1,500, whereas a larger 1,500-gallon tank costs $1,500 to $2,500.

The ideal depth of a septic drain field is 18 to 36 inches below the surface. The trenches must be deep enough to allow proper wastewater distribution and filtration while remaining shallow enough for oxygen to reach the soil, promoting bacterial activity that helps break down contaminants. In areas with high groundwater or poor drainage, shallower systems like mound drain fields may be required.

If you aren’t sure if you have a septic tank or a cesspit, you can check your property records or inspect your drainage system. A septic tank has an outlet pipe that allows liquid to drain into a soakaway or drain field, while a cesspit is a sealed tank that requires frequent emptying. If you notice a manhole cover and no nearby drainage field, it’s likely a cesspit. Signs like slow drainage or a frequent need for pumping can also provide clues. A professional inspection is the easiest way to confirm if your home runs on a septic tank or cesspit.

Schedule annual inspections, test water pressure, and protect the pump from freezing temperatures.
