While you might think that phantom flushes are simply eerie, they are bad for your toilet (and wallet). These flushes indicate a leak somewhere in the toilet system that needs repairing. These leaks can cause damage to your walls, flooring, and even your plumbing system. While one random flush every now and then might not seem like a big deal, leaving it unattended can lead to bigger problems. 

The most common toilet repair is dealing with clogs, followed closely by replacing a worn-out flapper. While clogs can happen anytime in any toilet, they most commonly occur with older toilets that have smaller diameter clearances and often empty into smaller diameter sewer connections. Because toilet flappers only last a few years, they are next in line for the most common toilet failures.

You should replace your toilet at least every 25 years. While toilets are pretty sturdy appliances, they don’t last forever. Even if you aren’t ready to invest in the cost of a bathroom remodel yet, just replacing your toilet will help freshen up your space and keep your bathroom functioning.

Toilet handles can get stuck for a couple of reasons, but it’s commonly an issue with the chain. Remove the lid and check the chain’s connection, running from the flapper to the handle arm. Sometimes the chain gets snagged on or against another part of the tank. 

The chain might not have the right tension. For example, a chain that’s too short can make the handle feel stuck. Check that there’s some slack in the chain. Old, worn-out flappers can get stuck, too. In this case, you’ll need to see which size toilet flapper you need.
