"Bill answered all my questions that I could think of, not knowing anything about HVAC. Bill, was very patience in figuring out my problem which he did. Now, my ac is working very well. We had a problem with my debt card going through and Bill took a picture of the back of my card so he could try later that evening. Still didn't work, again Bill was patience with me in settling my bill with him. Thanks again Bill."

"I donâ t often write reviews for companies Iâ ve hired to do service work. Iâ ll give them a star rating and thatâ s usually it. So why do one for Northland Air Duct Cleaning and owner Joe Black, read on and see why. I have an HVAC company weâ ve been using for years to do a/c and heating regular maintenance. They have suggested on more than one occasion that we need to get our air ducts cleaned. I knew we did but was not happy with the $750.00 estimate to do the work. Surely this canâ t be this expensive. I went on Home Advisors to get some more bids and settled on Joe and his company. He had a 4.8 rating and nearly 200 reviews. Seemed pretty good to me. I reached out to Joe and we set an October 15th appointment to come clean our ducts and dryer vent. Joe was here nearly five hours and by all appearances did a great job. A couple of days later our house smelled like something odd was burning. I called Joe and he said it might be residual dust from the cleaning passing through the heat exchanger but it should go away. It did. Several weeks later we noticed that when the house got a little chilly and we wanted to move the thermostat up to a higher temp, the furnace would kick on, run for a little while then stop but the blower was still engaged. My wife reached out to our HVAC regulars to see if they could send a tech out to check out our unit to make sure nothing was amiss. Because we have a service membership with this company, we were able to get a service tech out quickly on November 24th. We explained what we were experiencing and he set out to diagnose the issue. He determined that the static pressure in our unit/duct work was compromised due to the â Aâ coil being plugged up with debris left over from the duct cleaning. The service tech provided me with a camera video showing me the problem. I was not a happy camper with this diagnosis and even less happy when our â long-timeâ service tech presented me with two options: They could clean the â Aâ coil and blower fan assembly for another $646.00 or use their preferred duct cleaning company for $699.00. This was on top of the $65.00 preferred member service call fee. They couldnâ t do it then as we would have to book another appointment. I called Joe the first thing the next morning and share with him our furnace issues. While he was very sorry that this happened and that he had never had something like this ever crop up in all his years in business and couldnâ t see how he might be to blame for this. I hung up with Joe as I had a few other options to visit. Joe called back and asked if he could send a friend of his that he said was someone he trusted in the HVAC business to check out our unit and work with him to fix the problem. I received a call from Donovan Day, Owner, All Day Comfort Heating and Cooling, to set an appointment that day. Levi Day was at our house at 2:30 PM fix our problem. He had the â Aâ coil cleaned and the blower fan okayed for use in 30â . In addition, he discovered that our exhaust vent from the furnace to the outside chimney was not up to code and needed to be replaced. He also, said that this was clearly not an issue caused over a long period of time but as a result of the duct cleaning and would deal with Joe on making it right. Now this all happened the Wednesday before Thanksgiving Day. Joe called the next morning to see how we were doing and I told him that at first, I was not very happy with his not taking responsibility for our furnace debacle, but he and All Day Comfort Heating & Cooling were going to be highly recommended by me. First for Joe standing behind his work, realizing it could be his fault for the problem and getting a solution to fix it. And to All Day Comfort H&C for their over the top excellence getting our problem solved in record time. Props to both companies."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Yes, it’s important to turn off your AC sometimes to give it a break and prevent it from freezing up. If your AC runs all the time, your system’s parts will wear down quicker, which may mean that you need to replace it sooner. Plus, using your AC constantly uses more electricity and leads to higher energy bills.

Yes, but they don’t feel the same as an AC-cooled room. You’ll feel cool, moist air, opposite from an HVAC system that dries the air as it cools. Ventless units also have less tonnage than alternatives like ductless and central air, which means they aren’t as capable of quickly cooling large spaces or circulating cold air.

A blocked return air vent can cause your HVAC system to work much harder and, therefore, less efficiently. The result is higher utility bills and poorer air quality. A blocked return air vent can also cause unpleasant dust, dander, and odors to linger in your home’s air.

One of the fastest ways to unfreeze an AC unit is to turn off the unit and, if it’s warm outside, use the fan-only mode to help blow warmer air through the unit to speed up the defrosting process. While it may be tempting to use a hair dryer to defrost the air conditioner, that high heat can damage the coils.

After defrosting, if you can safely solve the issue with a fix like changing the filter, go ahead and do so. Otherwise, call in a pro before turning your AC back on.

You should get anywhere from three to five quotes for HVAC replacement to get an idea of the average cost of a new unit. Although this quote-collecting process can be time consuming, it allows you to compare what work is required, what type of unit you should install, and how much you should expect to pay for the service.
