"Mike is an exemplary professional. He was so generous in trying first to help me troubleshoot over the phone. He came out on a Saturday morning for a very reasonable rate. He had the issue fixed in an hour and my family was warm and toasty very quickly. I have told anyone who will listen that Mike is the HVAC guy they want to hire for any of their needs. Will certainly use him for future HVAC needs."

"Technician was quiet, unobtrusive, efficient. He told me what work was done and the condition of my HVAC system. He dutifully recommended a couple of accessory items for me to consider, but did not “push” them."

"Jon is truly the nicest, most honest guy in the business. We purchased a new A/C and furnace unit in 2019. He made an impression and Iâ ve always known to call him for HVAC surface. Most recently he came out on a Sunday evening for my momâ s A/C that was struggling to keep the house cool. He identified it was low on Freon, but before he did, he checked everything thoroughly. He reassured my mom that only the coolant was needed and did not try to oversell her anything. Truly an amazing business owner."

"I purchased the $59.00 furnace tune up from Dick Ray Plumbing via Angies List. When the service representative Cody called on the scheduled day of service to provide his arrival time he stated that he would be performing a furnace inspection. When Cody arrived I informed him that I had paid for a furnace tune up not inspection and he very politely informed me that the ad said tune up, but meant inspection. I took him to the furnace and then went to my computer to verify they I had purchased a tune up and not inspection. I printed the Angies List listing and gave it to Cody and informed him that what he was providing was not what I expected to receive. I am a native New Yorker and sometimes I appear more aggressive than I really am and I told Cody this and that I was not trying to be rude or pushy. He was polite and patient throughout the visit and explained everything thoroughly. Our furnace is relatively new and I would not expect to find anything was wrong, but I wished to make sure the furnace was operating correctly and if some tweaking was necessary it would be done. I also mentioned the I assumed that there would be some vacuuming as needed and the whole house humidifier also "tweaked." As I remember it, everything passed "inspection" I have no desire to formally complain or document negative feedback, but I do not feel that I got what I paid for."

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

When your AC contactor goes bad, you might hear chattering or buzzing noises coming from your air conditioner. You may also notice that your AC is running but isn’t cooling your home. In some cases, your air conditioner might not even turn on at all. There could also be physical damage, discoloration, or corrosion around the contactor.

No. Your furnace does not run your air conditioner. Both units use the same system of ductwork to move conditioned air throughout your home, but you can have a furnace without having an air conditioner and vice versa. Furnaces are only for heating your home. You can buy a system that does both, however, like a split system or a heat pump (yes, heat pumps cool, too).

There are a few ways to determine if a vent is open or closed. You can inspect the vent and examine the position of the fins. If there are spaces between them, the vent is open. If the fins are flat and touching, the vent is closed. You can also stand under the vent when the system is running to see if you feel air flowing through it.

It depends on the size of the space you’re cooling down. If you’re looking for the most affordable way to cool an entire house over a long period of time, then central air will be more cost-effective. But when it comes to cooling down a couple of rooms or one floor, a window unit may be the cheaper option, with both a lower cost to install and less energy used to run.

Most HVAC companies charge a flat service call fee of between $75 and $150, which includes traveling to your home and inspecting your system to find the underlying problem. Keep in mind that these prices only include diagnostics and the actual repairs will usually be billed separately. If you’re calling for routine service, the service call will be included in your inspection and tune-up, with the total sitting around $150. Your prices could be a little higher if you have a very large home with multiple condensers and air handlers, as inspections and servicing take longer.
