"I cannot say enough good things about A&W Restoration. They were professional, informative, responsive, and extremely helpful/patient, they answered all of my questions (there were many I might add). They demonstrate a high quality of workmanship; we are thrilled with the final product (roof repair/replacement and gutter replacement). I would highly recommend A&W Restoration, and will continue to utilize their services in the future."

"My house needed a new roof. A friend recommended that I give 5G Roofing a call. Tim came out the next day, He inspected my roof for free and advised that I indeed needed my roof replaced. Once I agreed to to having my roof replaced, his crew replaced my roof in one day. They did excellent work and cleaned up everything before they left. I would recommend 5G Roofing to anyone!"

"We called gateway brothers after a hail incident. Our roof was old, and we wanted to get it replaced under our homeowner's policy. Tony explained how the system worked and how we could make the most of the claim. Tony and Aaron are personable and the work they did was exactly what we needed. We had some previous water damage that was not covered by the claim, and they handled that for us as well with a very modest upcharge. We would definately use them again."

Roofing questions, answered by experts

Hail damage is bad for a roof because it can leave the roof vulnerable to the elements. Hail may leave more than dents or scratches behind. It can actually cause the shingles to crack, which means water can leak into your home from the roof. Hail can also wear down the granules on the shingles. Without these granules, the shingles are weaker and more vulnerable to the elements, particularly wind. If the hailstorm is accompanied by high winds, it may take your shingles with it.

There are several signs that indicate you’ll need new underlayment. Clear signs include missing or damaged roofing and exposing the underlayment to the elements. Additionally, if you notice water damage in your home by the roof after a storm, it could indicate that your underlayment may need to be replaced. If your gutters aren’t draining properly, it could also lead to rotting or water damage to the underlayment.

Many states require roofers to be licensed, and some states don’t mandate licensing. You can use Angi’s state licensing tool to check if a roofing company holds the proper licensing for your area. A licensed roofing contractor will provide reliable roof installation service, leading to a reduced risk of leaks in the future, which can be expensive to repair. Paying more for a licensed roofer upfront often means paying less over time.

Roll roofs don’t last as long as traditional roofs, like those made of asphalt shingles. A roll roof typically lasts between five and 15 years, whereas a shingled roof will last between 20 and 50  years. Modified bitumen roofs are similar in look to rolled roofing but have a 12 to 15 year warranty.

Though cedar shakes often get confused with shingles, there are a few key differences between wood shakes and wood shingles. For one, cedar shingle prices are lower, although shingles are less durable than wood shakes. Cedar shakes are thicker than shingles (shingles range from about 3/8 to 1/2 inches thick, compared to 1/2 to 3/4 inches thick for shakes). Wood shakes are handmade, while shingles are usually machine-made. Also, wood shakes work better on steeper roofs than shingles do. While the cost of cedar shingles is more budget-friendly, there are many great reasons to choose shakes.
