"Did an excellent job of sealing up the house. Could not install the one-way vents until after August 15 due to protection for the bats during the breeding season. Will return after that date and finish the job. He only charged for the work that was completed. My neighbor had used him in the past and was well pleased."

Both insects can damage wood, but there are key differences between termites and carpenter ants that tell them apart. Carpenter ants tunnel through moist wood, leaving behind smooth tunnels and sawdust-like piles, as they don't eat the wood but rather carve it for nesting. Silverfish can infest a bed, but it’s not likely unless you have a major infestation. Silverfish may be attracted to the fabric of the bed and the dark corners of the mattress, so you should check your bed thoroughly if you are seeing silverfish throughout the house. Seeing them in bed is a bad sign, because it means they are eating your cotton or silk sheets while they’re there.

Foggers work best on insects out in the open, such as ants. Insects that tend to hide, including bed bugs, are less susceptible to the bombs and will likely need to be dealt with in another manner.

It can be difficult to know what type of animal is in your attic until you see it. But several clues can help you narrow down the suspects:

  • Sounds: Smaller animals like rats and mice make scurrying and tapping/gnawing sounds. Larger animals like raccoons and opossums make louder clambering noises. Also, note when animals are noisy: Squirrels are active during the day, while rats are busiest at night.

  • Droppings: Rats and mice leave small, rice-shaped droppings (the rat’s version is significantly larger). Bigger droppings belong to larger critters like raccoons. As long as you’re not squeamish, an image search can help you identify what you’re seeing in your attic.

When in doubt, take photos of damage or other evidence and show them to an experienced pest control pro.

Scent deterrents like ammonia, vinegar, mothballs, and pepper can help keep coyotes away, but these are best used in tandem with other preventative measures. Remember that ammonia and vinegar can kill your plants and/or grass, so it’s best to soak rags in these substances or spray them on hardscaped areas to avoid damaging your landscape.
