"Hans was prompt returning my request for service, and showed up exactly on time. He installed my charging unit for my new hybrid in my garage where I wanted it, along with 2 surge suppressors for my 2 breaker boxes. After finishing the install, he cleaned up behind himself along with the leaves, etc. that had accumulated over the years. His price was fair and I'd definitely hire him for more work in the future. Nice young man to boot!"

"Barker Electric was fantastic. Brian and his crew installed all the electric in my new build, from placing floor outlet receptacles and conduit prior to foundation pour, to planning the inside and outside lights and outlets, to installing the light above my sink. Brian and his crew were professional, punctual, and completed all the tasks they said they would! I highly recommend Barker Electric! I will hire them again !"

"Ed did a great job. He had great communication throughout the project. He installed a generator hookup, moved some items around on our panel, and installed a few extra outlets for us."

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Energy output depends on turbine size, average wind speed at your site, and system efficiency. A 5 kW turbine in a good wind location can generate 8,000 to 12,000 kilowatt-hours per year, which may cover a large portion of an average home’s needs. Accurate output estimates require a professional wind assessment and a review of your household’s energy usage patterns.

If you’re wondering whether gas generators produce carbon monoxide, know that natural gas generators do not produce carbon monoxide if they are functioning properly, as natural gas burns cleanly. However, if the generator malfunctions and the gas does not burn completely, there is potential for carbon dioxide to be produced. To prevent malfunctions, it's crucial to perform regular maintenance, including running the generator weekly and scheduling professional inspections every 6 to 12 months. Also, be sure to test your carbon monoxide detectors regularly to ensure they function in the rare case of the generator producing carbon monoxide.

A 10,000-watt generator can run a small to mid-sized central AC unit (typically up to 3 tons or 36,000 BTU) along with a few other appliances. However, larger AC units or additional loads will require a bigger generator. Consult a local generator installer to ensure you add the correct size generator to your home.

Portable generators provide backup power for essential appliances during outages and are easy to relocate.

Sizing a generator is a careful process that requires calculating the electrical load of your entire house. You have to take into account every device you want to use and their wattage requirements, plus the wattage needed to start them, and look for a generator that can safely run all that at around 80% capacity.

In more practical terms, a small home can run on a 10,000-watt generator (and if you only want to power a few key appliances, much less than that). A mid-sized home may need something between 15,000 and 22,000 watts. Larger homes require 25,000 watts or more.
