"Jesse with JNM came out when he said he would and inspected my deck. I had a lot of rot and wanted a smaller low maintanence deck. He took measurements and sent me his estimate. I also had several other companies come out and they both gave estimates and then offered a $2,000 discount if I signed that minute but I wanted to wait for Jesse since his reviews had been so amazing. The two companies with the $2,000 each discount were in the range of Jesse’s, but I preferred the way Jesse listed his expenses without the pretend discount. A few days before the work began I had a concern about wanting more privacy and he came up with an idea for a privacy wall exactly where I needed it. They came out when scheduled, built my deck on schedule. It’s even better than I imagined it would be. I can now sit on my deck and enjoy my coffee while my neighbors are frolicking in their pool. I highly recommend JNM. Jesse was super nice to work with."

Deck Maintenance questions, answered by experts

The most likely causes of a deck leaning to one side are damaged deck posts, soil erosion, and inadequate deck footings. If you’re not sure about the exact cause, the best option is to call a contractor who can build a deck to inspect the damage and recommend the best way forward.

Unless you’re using a 2-in-1 formula or painting over an existing coat of paint, it pays to apply a coat of primer ahead of your new paint. Decks see a lot of footfall and exposure to extreme and sudden temperature changes and moisture levels. The primer promotes better paint adhesion, moisture repellency, and a smoother finish, which means you’ll often need fewer coats of paint.

Materials for a second-story deck must be weather- and rot-resistant, though the specific choices will largely be determined by your budget and style preference. Pressure-treated wood is on the lower end of the price scale, but it can be customized and stained the way you like it. Composite, on the other hand, is pricier for installation and has fewer options for customization, but you’ll save money and time in the long run because it requires little maintenance.

Decks are generally more expensive to build because they require elevating and railings. The difference between decks and patios is that decks are elevated, while patios are usually on the ground level. Plus, decks are usually made of wood and need more maintenance than most patios. However, decks and patios serve the same purpose, providing outdoor space for you to enjoy.

Typically, most residential wooden decks are designed to support approximately 40 pounds per square foot, including the deck’s weight and any items placed on it. While this is fine for typical use, it is usually not enough to hold the weight of a hot tub filled with water and people. To safely support a hot tub, your wood deck will likely require reinforcement. Therefore, it’s best to have a contractor or a structural engineer assess it before hot tub installation.
