"If you are considering Riverside Painters, my recommendation is to ?Proceed with Caution?. I hired them in March/April 2025 and received much less than expected. Aleks will write you a great contract, however not follow the agreement once started, he will take short cuts especially when you are not paying attention. Attention to detail as outlined in the contract is not their strength and considers items petty when you point out (see pictures). First of all, Riverside consist of just Aleks and 1 part-time employee. The majority of wall painting/rolling is subcontracted to young inexperienced people not affiliated with Riverside and Aleks does not take responsibility for their work. As you will see in the attached contract language, Aleks was supposed to remove cabinet doors, use a stripper gel, stain and replaced. He ended up leaving the doors on and sanded, not what was agreed to. Also see language regarding wall preparation and pictures of the results. I wouldn't use them"

To child- or pet-proof your deck railing, look for railing systems with narrow spacing—under 4 inches—between balusters or panels. For added safety, consider installing a clear acrylic or mesh guard along the inside of the railing to prevent small limbs or paws from slipping through. While the chemical, copper-based coating on pressure-treated wood offers protection from rot and pests, it’s not a silver bullet. An added sealant will help protect the wood further, though sometimes the wood is treated in a way that causes premature failure, and this is largely out of your control. It’s simply a case of bad luck. Regularly inspect all your house’s wood to look for any cracks or signs of mold and mildew. Getting ahead of the problem is the key to ensuring it doesn’t grow out of control.

Learning how to fix water-damaged or swollen wood is possible, but it won’t always work if there is significant warping or structural damage that was caused by the water. Cosmetic issues such as nicks, bubbling and peeling can often be fixed by using an iron, sanding, or using wood filler.

You can add a roof to most decks, but you need to have it inspected first. If your deck didn’t come with a roof initially, it may not be able to handle the weight without some structural changes. You can add additional supports to your existing deck to safely add a roof, and tying your deck’s roof to an exterior wall can help add some structural stability, but remember these aren’t DIY projects and need to be left to a pro.

  • Porticos are essentially a roof over a walkway leading to the home's front entrance. 

  • Sunrooms are closed-in porches that are an extension of the house with glass or plastic panels that allow optimal sunlight. 

  • Wraparound porches extend around the entire home, or at least the front and one side, and offer multiple entrances to the house.

  • Back porches are an extension of the home’s floor into the outdoors. These offer more protection and privacy than a deck.
