"Job went perfect. I was approved for financing the day I called. When the contractor came out for the bid, he made a materials and labor suggestion based on our needs. The original estimate of 9k worth of unnecessary privacy fencing, that I could not afford, went down to 2.5k of sturdy chain link providing a safe play space for our rescue dog. The contractor said they are more interested in helping customers out than making large sales. The fence is very professional. It is even wired into the ground so our dog cannot dig under it. The city inspector said it was a "perfect" construction job. Finished in under 8 hours. Roughly 100 feet of chain link, posts, concrete, plus gate. High quality materials and the yard was spotless when the job was finished. Very trustworthy. I feel strongly that I got what I paid for. Peace of mind that my dog, a known short fence jumper, is safe as well as my yard and padlocked gate. The most important part, is that my dog LOVES the freedom of having a large yard to run freely in."

"Tim did a great job.  I received 3 bids, Penniston was well under the high bid and a little over the low bid.  I chose Penniston because I felt comfortable with Tim when I met him.  He showed up for our initial appointment on time, walked the property with me, made some suggestions, emailed me a proposal the next morning.  When I contacted him to do the install he gave me a date to start the job.  He showed up on that day, removed the old fence, drilled the post holes and contacted the Creve Coeur inspector. The following day after the inspection he installed the entire fence.  We ordered a arched gate that he told us would take about 3 weeks to get from his supplier.  When the gate came in(within 3 weeks) he contacted me and came out on Saturday and installed the gate.  We re just waiting for the final approval from the Creve Coeur inspector. The fence looks great and Tim has been a pleasure to work with.  I would highly recommend Tim  Penniston.

"We hired dirt to done to help us renovate our rental home. They were very professional and finished quickly. They made the home look so beautiful! Matthew came to gave us an estimate and discussed design ideas and he brought an estimate back to us in a couple days that was well in our budget. The house needed so much work we thought it would turn out “just alright” for the money. We were wrong it turned out amazing!!I it turned out so much better than we had anticipated. They replaced trim, repaired drywall, repaired doors and even repaired the ceilings and cracks. They installed new flooring throughout the home. The repairs and paint looks so good you can’t tell that there was ever things to fix. The remodeled kitchen turned out like a dream!! It is amazing. All in Matthew was very informative in the hows, when’s and whys and the quality of work they did was above and beyond what we were promised!! We will absolutely recommend dirt to done for your renovations."

Driveway Gates questions, answered by experts

When making this decision, three essential factors come into play. For budget-conscious individuals, swing gates are the more economical choice. Despite the possibility of both gate types having similar dimensions, many types of sliding gates demand a more intricate opening mechanism and additional components, requiring electrical work for motors and signaling remotes, resulting in higher installation costs.

You can install a privacy cover on your wrought iron gate anytime. However, pick a dry day if you apply stain or paint to the paneling. If you’re hiring a local fencing contractor, they often offer better rates in their low season outside the busy spring and summer months.

When building an outdoor or deck gate, it's crucial to use durable wood that can withstand harsh weather conditions like sunlight, rain, wind, and snow. Redwood and cedar are excellent choices as they naturally resist decay. While redwood is considered more elegant, cedar is a more affordable option. Other suitable woods include oak and pressure-treated pine, which is specifically treated to resist rot. Although some softwoods like pine are popular, untreated softwoods such as pine and spruce should generally be avoided for outdoor projects because they are susceptible to damage from water, rot, and the sun. Ultimately, it's wise to consider your local climate when selecting the right wood for your gate.

To make your gate safe, purchase a gate made from strong material such as wrought iron, stainless steel, or other metals. Ensure that the gate has strong joints and bars that are welded on rather than inserted loosely. If you’re concerned about people climbing over your gate, you can deter them by installing fence spikes along the top as an extra precaution.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.
