"We bought a house recently. The inspection report called for installation of an expansion tank and lengthened drip leg on the HW heater. Jamison Plumbing had installed the new HW tank several months before for the original home owner. Jason called the City of Liberty to determine the exact code requirements. He called back and agreed to the additional work at no charge. He was able to make the changes in a timely manner. His crew called to say they would be later than planned because of an unexpected delay at the preceding job site. We appreciated his willingness to finish the installation according to code and to cover the additional materials and time. It was a great way to be welcomed into a new community.

"Carter installed a water softener at our old house about four years ago. The softener has worked great and has been trouble-free - just throw a couple of bags of salt in the tank every month. We recently moved and called Carter to move the softener to our new house. Jeff is punctual, courteous, prepared, and professional. High quality unit and installation at a reasonable price. Great company."

"The yearly service works out to be $50 a month. We've had two water heaters replaced through them because of a fault in them. They're usually very responsive. I like that I can request the service online. The only thing is, I wish that there was a better avenue for emergency services. If something doesn't work right away usually it takes a couple of days to get someone out and sometimes you can't wait two days without water."

"I called in at 2:30 AM and ii got an answering machine. I had left messages at 2 other companies so I thought "what the heck, I might as well see if this company will return my call." With-in 10 min I had a call back and they had a tech out witth-in the hour. The man I spoke with on the phone went through step by step what I needed to do to shut off the water because it was leaking all over my floor. They were prompt and had wonderful customer service. The tech had a badge on with his picture and the company name which made me feel very secure to let them into my home in the middle of the night. I can not say enugh about Reeds 24HR Plumbing. I would use them again and would definatlty recommend them to my friends and family. OH and the cost was very reasonable for having to come out in the middle of the night! I received a courtesy call the very next day to check on how things went and if there was anything else they could do for me. THANK You Reeds And to the professional Tech Scott that did a super job.

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

There are several things that can shorten the life of a water softener. Homes with very hard water may have to replace the unit sooner because the water softener works harder to filter out the hard minerals. High water usage and infrequent maintenance can also put more strain on a water softener.

Yes. To get soft water, you can install a water softening system, which will replace the calcium and magnesium ions in the water with sodium or potassium ions. Water softeners cost anywhere from $200 to $6,000, depending on the size and complexity of the system. You can either install a water softener for the whole house or just at your shower heads. If you’re sensitive to sodium or potassium, you can install a salt-free water conditioner.

Hard water isn’t necessarily bad for you. In some ways, it’s good for you. If you’re deficient in magnesium or calcium, hard water can give you a mineral boost that you wouldn’t get with soft water. However, this is where the benefits of hard water pretty much stop. Hard water can cause many minor inconveniences and lead to costly, premature replacements of your water-using appliances.

The primary difference between a water softener and a water filter lies in what they remove from the water. A water softener is designed to remove hard minerals like calcium and magnesium. In contrast, a water filter has a broader effect, removing various contaminants above a certain size, which can include bacteria and other impurities.

To decide which you need, consider your goal. If you want to eliminate hard minerals, choose a softener. If you want to remove a wide range of contaminants, a filter is the better option. Filters are also generally less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply, you may need to install both for comprehensive treatment.

If your water softener repair is fairly straightforward, like a simple filter replacement, then you can probably do it yourself with little risk. However, anything beyond a simple fix should be addressed by someone with extensive plumbing expertise to avoid costly water softener problems, like leaks.

That said, even simple problems can be complicated to diagnose, particularly if your water softener is attached to a whole-house treatment system. So, unless you feel absolutely certain that the problem is an easy fix that you can take on yourself, it's probably best to hire a plumber to diagnose and fix the problem.
