"Mark was ill for his first appointment but did call to reschedule, which I very much appreciated. He came to my house, on time, for his rescheduled appointment to look at my door. It had not been closing for years. He did a temporary fix, which helped in the interim, but he told me the door needed to be rehung. He did not charge me until his worker, John, came out and rehung the door. It works perfectly now, better than when it was first installed. I learned from Mark on his first visit that his business is a kind of handyman service too. In addition to fixing the door, John did some other odd jobs for me. He worked hard and did good work. I was not excited about the caulking job he did, so I took off a 1/2 star for that. I only took off a half star because he did many other jobs and did professional work on the rest. My only other complaint is that on the two occasions John came out, I was told he would be here at 9 am. Both times, Mark contacted me to say he had scheduled John elsewhere first thing in the morning. I appreciate that Mark's communication was good and kept in contact about schedule changes. That is not the norm for contractors, in my experience. I just would have liked for John to be here both days for the FULL day so more could have been accomplished. However, i was only charged for the time he worked, so I can't complain about that. Overall, I would recommend MHK."

"Great group to work with. High level of craftsmanship, design and project management. I recommend them for any mid to high end kitchen remodel. We left on vacation and turned our home over to them, with no regrets and high praise for their efforts. As the owner Mike said, we don’t get call backs….they did it right the first time."

"Our neighbors recommended Dwight McGarrah's painting company because he did an excellent job painting their dark wood kitchen cabinets, producing a bright, modern white decor. Dwight and his 4-man crew did a lot more than paint for us. We also needed ceiling repairs at 4 places in the kitchen & hearth room where speakers had been removed and poorly patched. They knew how to repair, re-plaster (with the needed knock-down effect) and repainted the entire ceiling. The crew took a full day to mask all the areas to be protected, from crown molding to base boards, appliances and light fixtures. They taped down heavy duty prot4ective floor coverings. Back to kitchen cabinets. We wanted the cabinets to be spray painted, not brushed or rolled. Our double garage was converted into a spraying area, completely sealed. A corridor from the kitchen, through the laundry room and into the garage was sealed and protected for easy access and movement. We highly recommend the spraying method. At first we were only going to do drawer and cabinet door faces and the exterior of the cabinet boxes. Once we removed all the cabinet contents, it was obvious all the insides and drawer interiors could use a coat of paint. The crew adjusted, handled it all exceptionally well. We also changed out about 80 old double dismount cabinet hinges and installed new ones to match the existing pulls. Start to finish, the project took 4 full days of taping, masking and careful preparation, removing doors and drawers, sanding and repairing dings and cracks, caulking and repairing some drawers, then a coat of primer. Finally, a beautiful semi-gloss enamel oil base paint to match the existing crown and base trim color....the completed project makes the whole kitchen look new! Lastly, more good news: After everything was done and the crew departed...we noticed a few pin hole marks on the inside of a couple cabinet doors....probably because of some floaters in the garage during spraying primer or the finish coat. called Dwight to discuss....he came by the house later that day, look a quick look and had the entire crew back the next morning to fix the small blemishes. Nothing serious, but Dwight tells everyone that the job is not done until the customer is totally satisfied. He means it. His work and his word are both outstanding. Highly recommend."

"As part of our replacing carpet with LVP flooring, we had to reconfigure a handrail with spindles. The spindles had to be removed from the underlayment, a plate needed to be installed, and the spindles needed to be reinstalled. There was some trim work which was needed on the stairwell side of the handrail as well. The really hard part was that it had to be done with very little lead time. Aaron and Bonnie came and reviewed the project with us, talked about our options, worked up a very acceptable quote, and gave us a date for their work. The whole project took them less than a day and was done to perfection. (We were uncertain at the time as to how we would finish the wood, so that was not included in their scope of work.) Their work was precise, on time, and affordable. Watching them work together was a fun side-benefit. Good people. We would highly recommend Aaron Custom Carpentry for projects such as ours. Thank you, Aaron and Bonnie!"

Cabinet Contractors questions, answered by experts

The cost to install a kitchen island ranges from $900 to $6,500, with an average price of around $4,800. The final cost depends on whether you buy a prefabricated unit or have one custom-built. Prefabricated kitchen islands are generally cheaper. A simple prefabricated cart can cost between $150 and $900, while a permanent, stationary prefabricated island costs from $900 to $5,000. A custom-built kitchen island averages around $4,800 but can cost $10,000 or more depending on factors like materials, size, design complexity, and accessibility.

It depends on your ceiling height. Wall cabinets are typically mounted 54 inches from the floor. So, if you have eight-foot ceilings, you’ll need 42-inch-high wall cabinets to fill the gap. And you’ll need 54-inch cabinets if you have nine-foot ceilings. But standard-sized cabinets don’t come in 54 inches, so you'll need to stack various sizes together. And, if you have ceilings higher than nine feet, it’s a good idea to have custom stacked cabinets made to fill your space.

The cost to install soft-close drawers professionally typically ranges from $40 to $100 per drawer. If you prefer a DIY approach, you can purchase the necessary hardware yourself. Soft-close inserts usually cost between $15 and $25 per drawer, while soft-close drawer slides can range from $5 to $230 each, depending on factors like quality, quantity, and type (e.g., heavy-duty, side mount, under mount, or self-closing). Investing in soft-close mechanisms can be worthwhile as they eliminate slamming and may help extend the lifespan of your drawers.

Thermofoil cabinets are an affordable option for anyone who is trying to revamp their home on a budget. They are durable, come in many styles, and give your home a whole new look without breaking the bank. However, if you are looking for a long lifespan out of your cabinets or want to add resale value to your home, then you should consider higher-quality cabinets instead.

Late summer or early fall are two popular times to upgrade kitchen cabinets. With the holidays right around the corner, this gives you spillover time in case your renovation project takes longer than anticipated. Then you get to host and show off your new kitchen when company comes.
