Customers say: Quick response

"bought new path lights for our home. tried to install myself. Out of 8 lights only two came on. in addition, couldn't remove old lights from wires due to horrible clips from old lights. In about 20 minutes after the job started half of my lights were working. he wired them the way i asked so i didn't have to worry if one failed...i could replace without those darn clips. Just looking outside and finally seeing them work made me so very happy. the lights came on tonight at dusk. I could hardly wait to see them. I've been outside 3x since dark. I just cannot believe how great they look. he even replaced light bulbs and checked my eye on my lamp post. all is very very well here thanks to midnight sun. amazing and fast job. definitely a favorite contractor."

"Jordan Blake from Exceptional Electric rocks! His communication prior to coming out was very thorough, and he was able to schedule us in two days. While he was onsite he found multiple items from years of DIY wiring, one major one. He clearly communicated al recommended changes to better match current code. As to the major item, he discovered the transformer was causing over-voltage delivery into our main! He had me call United Electric, and the linemen were out even before Jordan left – kudos to U.E. Cooperative – and replaced the transformer on the pole. All this for what started out as just putting a new 30A circuit in for a mini-split! Our mini-split is not yet on site, so we look forward to having Jordan back to the farm to complete the electrical plus a couple of the found issues next week. He is so knowledgeable. I highly recommend him. His sense of humor is also a delight, and my husband enjoyed learning and discussing many things with him. His prices are excellent."

Small jobs welcome

"My wife says Iâ m â particularâ â ¦. ð Iâ m not sure Iâ m particular, I just expect contractors to do exactly as agreed and to do a good job just as they would want! Farm Creek Electric did exactly that on our electrical job north of Cameron, MO! We had a line ran 200â and two RV boxes installed with 50, 30, and 20 amp plugs installed. Dean communicated well, knew exactly what I wanted after telling him one time, completed the job quickly, and honestly exceeded my expectations!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

An undersized whole-house generator has the potential to overheat and shut down when you try to run a central AC system. This scenario can not only damage the whole-house generator, but can also trip your home’s breakers or cause electrical damage. To avoid this situation, hire a local generator installer to correctly size your whole-house generator.

It is safe to run a generator continuously, but you must follow safety protocols to ensure personal and home safety. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for specific recommendations, but the general recommendation is to turn generators off overnight or when you’re away from the house. Overworked generators can pose a fire hazard and if your generator is not in a well-ventilated area, running it continuously could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

While diesel is relatively stable, it won’t last nearly as long as propane and you may have to replace it if it sits unused for too long. Diesel can sometimes struggle to work efficiently or start engines during especially cold weather, so it’s not the best choice for every climate. Compared to fuels like propane and natural gas, diesel generators tend to be noisier and create more exhaust, which isn’t always ideal for home use.

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.

It might seem counterintuitive, but installing a generator transfer switch will save you money in the long run. While you’ll have to pay between $400 and $2,500 to have the transfer switch installed, you’ll recoup that amount later on when you don’t have to pay for expensive repairs to your appliances, devices, and electrical system that may have burned out, overloaded, or stopped working due to a sudden loss of power or an incorrect hook up of a generator to your home
