"We called Southern Grace Exteriors to inspect the roof of a rental property we own in Hilton Head, SC. Our management company said we needed a new roof .... and that they could do it quickly for a HUGE price. We decided to get a second opinion and called Southern Grace. They showed up on time, climbed up on the roof with me and told us that our roof was just fine - probably had 10 more years left. They also said that whoever told us we needed a new roof didn't know what they were talking about. Honest and straight forward - a refreshing change to the norm for many contractors.

"On November 17 I wrote, "DaWayne Butler and his crew are timely, well trained, skilled and very responsive to the customer's needs. I would recommend him for anyone needing their basement remodeled. He is working on mine as I write and doing a fine job." On November 18, 2007 ALL THAT CHANGED. Thankfully Dawayne hired a competent framer, because nothing else we contracted for came to fruition. The project was contracted to conclude on Dec 24. I fired Dawayne on Jan 19, with two weeks of work left to complete and all our money spent."

"Professionals all the way around! Isaac gets you all set up. The crew was excellent and thorough and the work was done with care. The crew was very accomodating, Joe, Brock, and Joe...and answered all of our questions. We made the best choice possible for our project. They removed an old bay window and installed new windows, a storm door and new gutters. And we couldn't be happier with our new siding! If you want a company that's honest, reliable, and knows what they're doing, these are the guys to use!"

"We had some recent storm damage that was minor (all things considered) and had called a few other local companies. Everyone wanted to quote us for an entire new side of siding - until Zykan Exteriors! They not only said they could do it, but were prompt in responding to the request and sent a team out within 48 hours. The team was friendly and it did not take them long to get the job done. It may have been just a small fix, but being taken seriously and not simply downplayed is a definite win in the book. Would highly recommend them for any size job in the St. Louis area - you won’t regret it!"

Siding questions, answered by experts

Yes, the thickness of siding is an important factor to consider when replacing it. Siding thickness helps to determine how your home retains and redirects heat. While thicker siding has a premium price, it offers greater strength and durability, stronger insulation, better wind and weather resistance, increased rigidity, and better soundproofing.

Vinyl is the most common shingle siding due to its rigid PVC design, longevity, affordability, and ease of installation. The next most popular types of shingle siding are fiber cement, which is in the mid-range for prices, and cedar shake, which is the most expensive. Consider the upfront cost, ongoing maintenance costs, and durability in your specific climate before deciding.

On it own, aluminum siding has a relatively low insulation value (also called R-value); aluminum siding has an R-value of 0.61. However, you can purchase insulated aluminum siding to increase the R-value to between 2 and 5. You can also install additional insulation within your walls to help maintain temperatures within your home. On average, insulation costs $1,825 to install throughout the typical home.

Clapboard siding is traditionally made of wood, and is one of the most common types of wood siding in North America. When people talk about wood siding, they are usually talking about clapboard siding. However, not all wood siding is in the clapboard style: It can be tongue-and-groove, shake, and other designs. Also, clapboard siding can sometimes be made of different materials, like vinyl or fiber cement, so the terms are not interchangeable.

Many modern homes have soffits, but older ones don’t, and you may be wondering why. Older homes have eaves that extend further beyond the home and help to circulate air, negating the need for a soffit. This style of building has faded away, therefore, modern homes need separate soffit installation. Modern soffits are more efficient than this older style and require less material to construct, saving homeowners money.
