"We love our new fence, it looks awesome! Rob and his crew did a great job! I would recommend him to anyone needing a fence. We have a big yard but they tore out the old fence and had the new privacy fence done in 2 days. We went with the pre stained cedar and it was even better than we expected."

"All About Fencing completed the work in less than a day. My new 6' privacy fence is exactly what I wanted. The company's customer service is top-notch, and their estimate was better than (but still on par with) other fence companies. They also were able to get to my project within a week, ensuring the safety of my dogs after the existing 4' chainlink fence began to fail. Should I ever need fencing in the future, I'll be calling All About Fencing for sure."

"I came to home advisor when I needed a reliable contractor to build our privacy fence. I wanted someone who had good reviews and would be trustworthy. James with JPC Custom Fences came up as the pro in our area and I am so glad we were connected to him! I knew he was the right guy for the job after our initial meeting. He had awesome pictures of his work and I was confident in his abilities. In the midst of being really busy he still got us on his schedule quickly. He is very detail oriented and made sure the fence was perfect. I am 100% satisfied with the work he did and will be using him again in the future. :)"

Fencing questions, answered by experts

The bottom strand should sit between 12 to 15 inches from the ground. If you have a problem with small critters, you can aim for 8 inches. Three-strand fences should be 16 to 19 inches apart, four-strand fences should be 10 to 12 inches apart, and five-strand fences should be 8 and 10 inches apart.

The most common height of a front yard fence is around 3 feet high, but it can vary depending on your zoning laws. If your fence is meant to create privacy, something closer to 6 feet or higher will do the trick. Most of the time, the highest fence you’ll see is 8 feet tall.

The thickness of a glass fence varies widely based on its application and whether or not there are any safety requirements, but most fences are between 8 millimeters and 12 millimeters thick. 12-millimeter-thick glass is extremely strong and overkill in most cases, which is why you typically only see it around pools and in skyscrapers.

Do you need a permit to build a fence if you are simply replacing an existing fence? Whether you need a permit in this case depends on your local laws and regulations. Most municipalities consider a fence replacement project as being equal to building a new fence, so you likely will need a permit. Check with your local building inspection department or zoning department to see if you need a permit. If you hire a local fence contractor, this pro can take care of obtaining all permits for you.

Since wood is weaker when installed horizontally versus vertically, a horizontal fence is prone to sagging. You can prevent this drooping from happening by building a sturdier fence. Use softwoods that are more stable, such as cedar and redwood, or denser hardwoods for your fence materials. If you can’t afford these pricey materials, use thicker two-by-six pressure-treated pine boards or shorten the span the fence boards have to cover by installing more posts.
