"My wife rearranged her Saturday plans to be home during the Saturday repair.  Elder 1 was supposed to arrive in the afternoon but by late afternoon nobody had arrived or called.  I called the office but it was closed, and I also emailed the Elder 1 representative who had inspected the roof.  I was stressing because we had a pretty good rain Sunday night but apparently the attic insulation held the water since I did not see any leakage on the bedroom ceilings underneath the open shingles.  Elder 1 called Monday, apologizing for the repair personnel not calling on Saturday when their early repair work overran their schedule.  They called Tuesday afternoon to complete the repairs Wednesday, which they did complete.  Elder 1 called me when the work was completed.  When I arrived home I was pleased to see the new shingle colors matched the remainder of the roof pretty well.

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Professionals repair or seal a skylight by inspecting for damages, resealing any gaps with appropriate weatherproofing materials, replacing cracked glass or seals, and ensuring the frame is tightly fitted to prevent future leaks and ensure proper drainage.

Leaks are the top concern for skylights, often due to improper installation or worn-out seals. Over time, water can seep in and cause major damage to your home’s ceilings and walls. Other common issues include condensation, which leads to mold, as well as physical damage from weather or debris. If they’re not sealed properly, skylights can also bring unwanted heat in the summer or cold in the winter, affecting your home’s energy efficiency and tacking on extra dollars to your bills.

Ceiling costs depend on many factors, such as the material used and size, but coffered ceilings are considered one of the more expensive ceiling options. If you want to install a coffered ceiling but have a limited budget, consider using plywood instead of hardwood—it costs $2–$4.50 per square foot, while hardwood can be as much as $20 per square foot.

Common skylight issues include leaks, condensation between glass panes, damaged seals, and cracks in the glazing. Regular exposure to weather elements can lead to these problems, requiring timely attention to preserve the integrity of the skylight and the surrounding roof structure.

Yes, you can cover up a skylight if you no longer wish to have it in your space. There are a few options for covering up a skylight. One option is to install a skylight cover or shade that can be easily opened or closed as needed, allowing you to control the amount of light entering the room. Another option is to cover the skylight with a solid material, such as plywood or drywall, effectively sealing it off. However, when covering a skylight, it's essential to ensure proper insulation and waterproofing to prevent any issues in the future.
