"The first time the install crew arrived they brought an entirely different skylight than I ordered. The one they had wasnâ t even the correct dimensions. After some discussion as to how this mistake happened I decided to order a skylight of a different design than originally ordered which in the end was a better product. The second time the crew arrived with the new skylight with the proper dimensions and proceeded to make a proper installation. This entire episode took longer than anticipated however the company was very responsive to the situation. We are pleased with our new skylight and would use this company again if ever needed."

"They seemed fine. They were there promptly. There was two of them, one gentleman was a supervisor. We spoke and discussed any issues that would thought on my head about the roof. Another gentleman, actually the roofing guy, set the job close by and arranged it that way, he came over within 5 minutes while we were talking up on the roof and took care of the problems and got the explanation of what was wrong. So, it worked out fine. We got them in January but we setted up towards the end of April. There is no reason I have somebody come during the rainy season and not be able to get on the roof anyway because it is too slippery. There was no charge. They came out and look the roof over and did some catching at the same time."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Common skylight issues include leaks, condensation between glass panes, damaged seals, and cracks in the glazing. Regular exposure to weather elements can lead to these problems, requiring timely attention to preserve the integrity of the skylight and the surrounding roof structure.

Whether you need a permit to install a skylight depends on the scope of the project and local regulations. Generally, permits are required if the installation involves altering the structural components of your home, such as moving roof rafters. In some municipalities, a permit might also be necessary if the skylight protrudes above the highest point of your existing roof. However, if no structural changes are made, a permit may not be needed. The cost for a skylight installation permit is typically under $100. A convenient time to add a skylight is during a roof replacement, as your contractor can incorporate the new opening into the design.

When planning out skylights and deciding how big they should be, it's important to look at the dimensions of the interior space. In addition to changing a room aesthetically, skylights influence the illumination and temperature of the space below. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that a skylight’s size should never be more than 5% of the floor area in rooms with many windows.

Yes, skylights can affect a home’s energy efficiency, either positively or negatively. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings, double glazing, and UV-blocking glass can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. However, poorly insulated or older skylights can contribute to heat loss in winter and excess heat gain in summer, lowering overall energy efficiency.

A skylight's ability to withstand hail depends on factors like material quality and thickness. Impact-resistant options, such as tempered or laminated glass, fare better against hail compared to standard glass. Proper installation and regular maintenance also contribute to their resilience. While smaller hailstones may not pose a significant threat, larger ones can cause damage. Consider skylight protection methods like covers or screens in hail-prone areas to enhance durability and minimize potential harm.
