Horrible! We were told several different dates & times for the work to be done. They tried to put up the wrong siding. Used whit trim pieces even though siding is almond color.

On one hand, Artown was very good about securing a payment from the insurance company--the insurance company denied our hail damage claim initially, but Artown went to bat for us (we clearly had hail damage) and got us a new roof. They did a good job communicating with the insurance company for us. For that, I am grateful.
From there, things went more sour. The installation of the roof went OK. We have an old house with some tight corners near dormers, and they didn't really catch the seams flush so there is a bit of warping on the shingles (minor issue). The work crew only had one person that spoke (choppy) English, which made communication difficult when a small issue arose during roofing, but everyone was professional and worked hard.
When I contacted Artown about a few small gaps in the roof near tight spots, it took forever to get someone out to check it, and when he came, I was not impressed with his professionalism (though he was very friendly). He said the issues were due to construction of our old house, which is possible, but I was not totally sure it was true. Our home inspection from the previous year mentioned no such thing. I got the sense there were issues of communication in the company, which were strengthened by the questionable way the needed repairs were discussed. After promising to come by early the next day and do the repairs for cash (off the company books?), he never showed.
I'm going to call the company today and report the strange behavior of the warranty/inspection person. Overall though, I feel I've had enough experience with Artown to recommend you go with someone else.

I chose the company based on a referral from a friend who was having their roof replaced at the same time. The work performed was good. The communications during the process was very good at first, then half way through the job my contact was let go and it took me weeks to get someone from the company to return my calls. I went from hearing from the company weekly to no contact for several weeks. I found the handling of the situation to be poor. The only way I knew what had happened was the man who was let go told me and gave me who the contact would be. Could never get the contact at the company to return my calls. I finally did reach the manager who was rather abrupt, but they finally finished the job. While the work was good, the customer service was less than desirable. The excuse I got was that they were swamped with storm business; that is no excuse for poor communication. If you can't keep up with the volume, you should only solicit what you can handle.

My insurance denied my claim except for a minimal amount of work. Larry Evans from Artown Roofing worked with us to have it all repaired as he recommended a reinspection and the insurance company agreed with what Larry pointed out to them.

The experience was all right. It was the insurance company that we were not happy with. It was okay but it wasn't excellent. They changed crews and they put gutter caps on the wrong house. They put them on the neighbor's house and put their gutters caps on our house. The insurance paid for the job. They got the job done so we would probably use them again.

They’re a great company to work with! They’re very responsive, immediately answered phone calls, and they listen. It’s been a great experience overall.

Artown field consultant, Larry Evans, came out and gave us a bid. He sent out his contractors for each job. He came out and checked on each job as well as made a follow up call to make sure we were happy with each job upon completion and we were. Rates were reasonable.

Roof turned out good so far, but the unbelievable hassles and down-right rude and unprofessional behavior of the owner and her husband are unforgivable.

"We did everything we could to accomadate the member we could. Unfortunately as hard as we tried, we could not make the member happy. Yet when he needed me to endorse a check after we were paid in full, he was extremely pleasant to me and very accomadating."

They also do business as Artown Roofing. They have complaints registered with the BBB. When I put my complaint with BBB, I immediately got threatened by their lawyer that I was going to get sued for slander. Apex Roofing is owned by Cheryl D Curtis. Her son's name is Dustin P Curtis who is a convicted felon. He has 10 or 15 felony arrests and those are the current ones. The latest one is property damage set for hearing on March 20th. He is into everything from drunken driving, felony of autos and properties and so on. This kid is the biggest con artist. He came to my house. In Chesterfield Wildwood, where I live, door-to-door felicitation is illegal, but I didn't know it then. He kept coming to my door leaving fliers and telling me that I have a bad roof and so on. I listened to all of that because I didn't know anything. I am single and live by myself. He told me all I had to pay was my deductible and whatever else the insurance paid, they would get. He filled the contract out there where it said that they would do the work for the insurance proceeds and I was responsible for the deductible. It looked alright to me, but I asked him how they knew what the insurance was going to pay. I had never seen a contract without any numbers. He told me that it was okay and he was a professional and he would meet the insurance person in my area and he was sure it was going to be fine. They did the work and at first I thought they did a good job. They even left the trash out. He then asked me for $1000.00 and told me that it was my insurance deductible. The insurance company deducted the 1000 from what they owed me. I was ready to give him a check for the remainder. They actually wanted the $1000 as well. Then his mother called up and started yelling at me trying to extort the 1000 out of me. I then found out what they put on my house was not what was in the contract. The home improvement company came out with the information that they were doing 3 re-roofs for the roofing company. They were trying to claim, but could not explain the money and they wouldn't give me individual lien waivers from all the people who worked on my roof as they were all illegals from Mexico. I couldn't even talk to them because it was all Spanish. They wanted the money and I told them that I wouldn't give the money unless they gave me the lien waivers, which they refused. That was not what the contract said. They slithered around after the insurance paid them. Then they told me that I was responsible for them, but I told them my responsibility lied with the insurance carrier. Insurance proceeds are paid out after the deductible is taken out. They wanted the whole full estimate and they just twisted it all out and that was a con. The whole insurance estimate was 8600, but the check was 7650 plus tax. They ripped off the existing roof. They didn't do any sub-roofing, but they put down 15 pounds roof paper that was supposed to be for regular prepared shingle. They then sold me the upgraded shingle and the kid told me that if I upgraded the shingle I could take that off my taxes with an energy credit. I then found out that not only was it not technically an upgrade shingle but the roof paper that they used would not support the upgraded shingle. The home improvement company told me that it would only last 10 years. All along I offered to pay them for the upgrade as I had agreed to and I even picked out the shingle. It looked like some of the upgraded shingles were on it, but they mixed in the prepared shingles and overlapped them to make it look architectural. They are con artistes. They are not licensed outside of Lake St. Louis. Cheryl Curtis, the owner, called me around Christmas wanting to settle this matter and she offered me $540.00 which was half of the cost of the shingle upgrade. I refused the offer. Dustin, the son, had done a roof repair which he assured me was covered under my insurance. It wasn't covered, so they were willing to deduct the repair charges of $150.00 from the total amount.
Response from Artown Roofing & Contracting
"I have one billing complaint with the BBB, which is the same person who wrote this review. And when she first made her complaint, she actually said that my company "did a good job" and her only concern was that she did not understand that she physically had to write us a check for her policy amount of her deductible, which is stated in our contract. It's been almost 2 years since we put on her roof, and she has not paid us a single dime. She has not paid us her deductible nor has she paid us any of the money she had received from her insurance company. We applied the materials that she had picked out and signed off on. This case is set to go to court in June of 2011. I made several attempts to try to come to some kind of agreement with [this member], but she refused and told me that we were not going to "profit off of her". Well when this is your livelihood, that's what you except at the end of the job, to get paid. She indeed had a roofing consultant come out to inspect her roof, and he could only find about $300.00 worth of items that he suggested that needed to be address. We offer a 10 year labor warranty which goes into effect as soon as we are paid in full, so if she would have paid us, then we would have gladly taken care of any labor issues. As far as legal issues that Dustin has incurred, that is personal and I will not address those. But he has indeed paid his debt to society and now is entitled just like everyone else to be able to live and work a normal life."
