"Tom did an amazing job repairing the bottom stair on our staircase. It's visible when you walk in our front door and important to us that it looked great and matched the rest of the staircase. Tom did beautiful work! In addition, he returned calls promptly, gave us a fair price and showed up when he said he would. And he even checked in a month after the work to make sure we were happy. We highly recommend Schmidt Woodwork and look forward to doing more projects with Tom!"

"If you ever need any work done, Trevor is the guy!  From start to finish, he did it right!  He had great design ideas, was always punctual and always kept his word.  They did great work at a very reasonable cost (we had 4 other bids--3 from Angie's List companies--and his was the best).  He answered every question we had, never made us feel like we were asking something stupid...the epitome of professionalism.  Highly recommended!

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Yes, Corian® and other solid surface countertops can be cut with standard woodworking tools like a circular saw or a jigsaw, but using the correct blade is crucial for the best results.

The recommended blade is a tungsten carbide-tipped blade, often called a solid-surface planer or triple chip grind blade. This type of blade is hard enough to cut through the material effectively. For a jigsaw, a fine-tooth down-cutting blade should be used.

It is important to note that a diamond blade is not necessary. Diamond blades are designed for harder materials like natural stone, concrete, or brick, and Corian is not a natural stone.

Using blades designed for wood is not recommended as they can cause microfractures that weaken the countertop's edges. While a tungsten carbide blade provides a much cleaner cut, the resulting edge will still be rough and must be sanded and smoothed to prevent microfractures from developing over time.

Many contractors prefer checks because they’re easy to track and have no associated fees. However, many also accept credit cards (though they might add a fee to cover their processing costs).

No, beams are the primary load-bearers for flooring or roofing systems, and they distribute the weight of the structure to your foundational supports, while joists bear far less weight and distribute their loads to the beams. Beams are usually thicker and longer, and they have support posts or foundation walls beneath them for support.

Carpenters are trained to take on a wide range of home projects. You can hire a carpenter to do framing, roofing, build custom furniture, and make significant upgrades to your home. General carpenters are usually able to handle most jobs. However, you may also choose to hire a carpenter who specializes in a specific type of carpentry.

Yes, carpenters can fix squeaky floors. They have the expertise to identify the source of the squeak, whether it’s loose floorboards, subfloor issues, or joist problems. These experts also have the right tools and hands-on knowledge to secure the flooring and eliminate the noise, ensuring a long-lasting solution.
