"Mike and his crew took down 4 trees and did major trimming on another. They came back as promised and removed the 4 stumps. They hauled away the wood chips, filled in the holes with black dirt and spread grass seed. Definitely will hire Mike again when needed."

"They did a great job. They are not overly eager to cut down trees. I had a few I wanted to take out, but they suggested keeping one, and explained how it would fill out once the others were gone. I liked that. They removed two trees and both stumps and left the area absolutely clean. I'll be using them again to prune an oak in the winter."

Brush Chipping questions, answered by experts

If debris from a tree located in a government-owned space (such as a sidewalk, public school, or government property) falls in your yard, it is the city’s or state government’s responsibility to have the debris cleaned up. On the other hand, most states only hold a neighbor liable for cleaning up their tree’s debris if they were negligent in caring for the tree.

You can leave grass clippings on the lawn, depending on their length. You don’t want to completely cover new grass and block it from sunlight, or encourage moss crowd out the more delicate grass. However, short clippings are usually fine to leave on the lawn. In some cases, they can be beneficial: Clippings can be a source of fertilizer and help protect the ground as young grass blades develop.

There are several ways to dispose of excess sod, including building a compost pile, taking it to a green waste disposal facility, donating the sod, or reusing it in another part of your yard. It’s a good idea to check with your local municipality to see how to get rid of yard waste, as some areas have local regulations on what can go in the green waste bin. For example, your recycling services may reject too much soil added to green waste.

Generally, it is not necessary to remove old mulch before applying a new layer. As organic mulch breaks down, it enriches the soil with nutrients. However, you should remove the old layer if it shows signs of fungus or disease, which can be common in moist areas, or if the total depth is already too thick. Avoid letting the total mulch depth exceed 3 inches, as this can harm plant roots. If you do remove old, disease-free mulch, it can be added to a compost pile.

If you want to remove a bush that’s located on top of utility lines, you’ll need to call your local utility company to determine the best course of action. If you can’t dig out your stump its roots, cutting a bush off at ground level might be the best you can do. Adding a planter over top of the cut branch or planting something else around the stump can cover the area while the stump decomposes.
