"Michael was very easy to work with and fully transparent on every step of the way. His output is very high quality and he restored our basement to fantastic condition. I appreciated the care he took on our project and the additional input he gave to offer suggestions on overall improvements to the space. If you hire him for a job then you're in great hands; Would hire again!"

"The team was very professional and the work was done within a reasonable time frame. I was notified when any hiccups in the schedule happened and was informed on every design decision and asked for approval. Amazing work around a bizzare unfinished basement layout."

"You should hire them.  Overall they did a great job.  I would recommend them to others.  Price was good.  They were timely and efficient and left a clean work site.  Dean was great to deal with and executed all of our requests.  When there was any minor hiccups, Benny and Dean worked together to make sure we were happy.  Beautiful fireplace, great job, great work and a job well done.

"BRZ made a recent front room remodel that included a bay window bump out and a built in window seat. Brett's workmanship was excellent and the attention to detail evident in all aspects. The room has a fresh new feel and the added comfort has transformed our home. BRZ is number one on our list for all of our home improvements!"

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Some older homes have toilets in the basement to combat sewage backups. This type of toilet, also known as a Pittsburgh potty, acted as a safety valve over the incoming sewer line. If a line backed up, it would back up into the toilet because it was the lowest fixture in the home, keeping it out of sight and away from the finished areas of the house.

Basement toilets were also used by workers with messy jobs, like those who worked in coal mines or steel mills. This way, they could clean up and avoid tracking dirt through their home.

Physically, the most challenging part of finishing a basement is installing egress windows or doors when the space is below ground level. Mentally, the hardest part may be envisioning the project and planning around load-bearing and mechanical obstacles.

Yes, most general contractors require an initial down payment. A reasonable deposit is typically between 10% and 25% of the total project cost, although this can vary by project size and location. This upfront payment helps the contractor cover initial costs like materials, permits, licensing, and hiring subcontractors. The remaining balance is usually billed according to a schedule outlined in your contract, often tied to project milestones or completion dates. Be cautious of contractors who ask for a large deposit of 50% or more, as this could be a red flag for a scam.

Costs are guided by renovation scope, materials chosen, project duration, structural needs, and labor. Prioritizing tasks prevents unforeseen expenses.
