"I had a great experience working with Emerald remodeling to redo the bathroom and layout in the basement of our home. They came highly recommended from a friend and delivered a significantly lower bid from other estimates from both a cost and timeline standpoint. Throughout the process, the owner was very patient with our queries and was a great communicator, often responding quickly to our questions and helping us through any changes in direction the project needed. The end result was exactly the basement bathroom setup we needed for our family. I could not recommend Emerald Remodeling enough, and will certainly work with them on any future projects. Thank you!"

"Overall the project went "good". We are still waiting to hear back on a "fix" that is needed. It has been weeks now, so I anticipate we will have to fix it ourselves. I was waiting for a completed project before I wrote this review, but I believe based on no feedback that they feel this project is completed, and we need to do our own repair (which would be okay if they told us what to do, and closed the loop on the project). The big stuff was done very well--the fireplace insert and most of the brick work. They did come back to fix small issues: TV cable (they picked the wrong one, and had to bust out the wall a second time), the slate on the floor had to be touched up (a bubble in the grout), and the grout around the insert had to be painted (it was cement color and stood out like a sore thumb. I am not sure if there was colored grout that would have worked better, but we had cement color and the fireplace/brick is brown). I asked for the color of the paint they used for future touch up, but I have not received a response (so much time has past that I don't think I will).
The outstanding issue is a brick pc had a noticeable gap in it, and it was in a highly visible spot in a corner and easily accessible (it was really one piece and looked easy to us to fix by their professional). We were told by the brick person it could be fixed (but sounded like a big deal), and then we were told by the general contractor that it was a manufacturers defect in the brick piece, and we would have to pay $350 for repair. We had to uncomfortably push back (they should have picked a different piece of brick was our thought). Once the brick piece was loosened, it was VERY easy to see that it was a VERY easy fix...re-position it, and glue it back on somehow. Right now, it is sitting in position, but not glued in place. we will seek advice on what product to use to glue it in place. Then the project will be completed. Besides the fixable issues, the only cosmetic regret is the way the corner turned out. it is near a wrap around wall, and I envisioned that the brick would slightly wrap the wall, but it didn't, which now leaves me with a very very small piece of wall to paint someday - I suppose we will use a very very tiny brush and a steady hand. Finally, I was looking for a general contractor to partner with on several other upcoming projects (bathroom remodels, etc)...I am not sure yet if I would contact Carter Custom. I really felt like I was a bother, and we had to stay on top of the details. Perhaps we are too small of a customer for their line of business.
Overall I wish them well, and their people are very nice. The overall value (price verses quality) was out of proportion due to the attention to detail and follow up (I paid close to $15,000 for a fireplace, and that didn't include the 60" TV)."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can add a door to your basement—it might even be required, depending on building codes in your area and whether or not you’re using the basement as a bedroom. A basement contractor can give you some advice on installation and help you add a door to your basement.

Yes, you can install a summer kitchen or kitchenette in your basement. They serve similar purposes as outdoor kitchens, keeping the main floor of the house cool and providing another space to cook and congregate. Basement kitchens are also a worthwhile alternative for homeowners without much space in the backyard. They come with a few logistical questions to sort out, though, like ventilation and waterproofing.

Framing a basement takes three to five days, on average, when completed by a professional, though it may take longer for a larger space. Keep in mind this doesn’t include the time to complete the design, obtain permits, and install the drywall on the framing. On average, fully finishing a basement takes an average of 45 days.

The best type of basement ventilation system depends on your budget, the moisture in your basement’s air, and the types of windows you have down there. You should consider all of these factors when choosing a ventilation system. However, the most effective method for basement ventilation is an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) or a whole-house ventilation system, which preheats or precools incoming air from the outside while also managing water vapor.

Lifting a house and adding a basement is one way to add usable square footage. Lifting or jacking a house is a complex process, and it can be expensive, not to mention that you won’t be able to live in your house while it’s lifted, due to safety concerns. Lifting a house should only be done by experienced professionals.
