"Michael was very easy to work with and fully transparent on every step of the way. His output is very high quality and he restored our basement to fantastic condition. I appreciated the care he took on our project and the additional input he gave to offer suggestions on overall improvements to the space. "I had a great experience working with Emerald remodeling to redo the bathroom and layout in the basement of our home. They came highly recommended from a friend and delivered a significantly lower bid from other estimates from both a cost and timeline standpoint. Throughout the process, the owner was very patient with our queries and was a great communicator, often responding quickly to our questions and helping us through any changes in direction the project needed. The end result was exactly the basement bathroom setup we needed for our family. I could not recommend Emerald Remodeling enough, and will certainly work with them on any future projects. Thank you!"

"You should hire them.  Overall they did a great job.  I would recommend them to others.  Price was good.  They were timely and efficient and left a clean work site.  Dean was great to deal with and executed all of our requests.  When there was any minor hiccups, Benny and Dean worked together to make sure we were happy.  Beautiful fireplace, great job, great work and a job well done.

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

Egress windows or doors are required in finished basements to meet safety and building codes. If your basement is unfinished and used as a storage space, egress windows are not required, but anything considered a habitable space must have an additional point of egress in addition to the stairs.

The time it takes to finish or remodel a basement can vary significantly, ranging from a few weeks to several months or even up to a year. On average, the construction phase can take four to eight weeks, but the total project time can extend to three or four months when including planning and permits. The timeline depends on several factors, including the basement's size, design complexity, the scope of the work, and your contractor's availability. A more detailed breakdown for an average-sized basement might include: framing (3-5 days), electrical and rough-in plumbing (3-5 days), drywall installation (5 days), flooring (2-3 days), and final touches like painting and trim (about a week). If preliminary work like installing a waterproofing system or addressing structural issues is needed, the timeline could extend to six to twelve months. Factors like difficult access, material transport, and ventilation needs can also add to the project's duration.

Yes, you can install a summer kitchen or kitchenette in your basement. They serve similar purposes as outdoor kitchens, keeping the main floor of the house cool and providing another space to cook and congregate. Basement kitchens are also a worthwhile alternative for homeowners without much space in the backyard. They come with a few logistical questions to sort out, though, like ventilation and waterproofing.

You should plan on waiting at least a year and ideally two to three years after construction before finishing your basement. This will give the foundation time to settle in response to the weight of your home and the expansion of the surrounding soil. You can then repair your foundation and seal any cracks as needed before finishing it to reduce your risk of future leaks or other issues.

You technically can paint wires in a basement ceiling, but there are several important safety and code considerations. It's safe to paint non-metallic sheathed cable as long as the labeling remains visible. You can also paint low-voltage wires and conduit and junction boxes to help them blend into your basement.

However, you should not paint damaged or deteriorated wiring is a fire hazard because it poses a fire hazard. The same goes for painting over high-heat wires that connect to heat-generating appliances or systems. Be sure to avoid painting multiple coats onto any wires, as that traps heat and poses fire risks.
