"We really like our 50+-year-old kitchen cabinets and wanted to keep them as we refreshed our kitchen. We met Tracey at a home show and set up an appointment for him to come give us an estimate. As part of this visit he picked out the most worn door in the kitchen and refinished it on the spot. A couple of weeks later we had the entire kitchen redone. The cabinets now sparkle and look like they were newly installed. The entire process took less than 8 hours! As the finish dried we noted a few spots where it had completely soaked into the wood grain. As promised, Tracey returned when we called and touched uo the spots that needed it. You can use most types of wood for a fireplace mantel. You can use simple veneer plywood. If you prefer solid wood, pine is an affordable option that's easy to cut and finish. Walnut is harder, heavier, and highly durable with a rich dark brown color. Hickory offers a lighter color but is similarly durable. Cedar is ideal for a rustic fireplace design.

Removing the original paint or stain before refinishing is a good idea, as it ensures the new finish bonds strongly to the wood. If you skip the stripping or sanding step, the new finish may peel or flake away from the railing easily. Using a wood stripper will completely remove the old stain or paint while sanding will help to prime the surface.

Follow care instructions based on the material, regularly clean, and avoid moisture or heat exposure.

It is possible to refinish a table without stripping and sanding it by repairing small dents. You’ll use a gel stain, and then put on a wipe-on finish. The downside is this won't result in as smooth and as deep of a finish as if you had stripped the table. Also, any blemishes on your table will remain.
