"It went very well. I called the emergency number about 10:30 p.m., and Rob came out, turned off the water heater (I couldn't move the lever due to hard water encrustation) and rigged a hose to drain the heater into the shower. The next morning Wayne showed up b/4 9 a.m., assessed the situation, explained the possibilities, and when I chose to replace both the heater and the softener (also probably at the end of useful life) as well as add a carbon filter, he called in for equipment, supplies, and help. The whole thing, with two working at it, took about 5 hours, but when they finished I had clean, soft, hot (when wanted) water on tap. Wayne also gave me a quick review of how things worked (the instruction manuals have been hung on the wall to be handy). He and his colleague (I didn't retain the name, sorry) made a very good job of getting all of this into a small laundry/mechanical room; it's not much more cramped than it was. They cleaned up the area when they finished (and I think left it cleaner than they found it, which considering my housekeeping style is above and beyond the call of duty), and took the old equipment away. (They also collected Rob's hose.) For the new softener, they recovered salt from the old unit for me as well as supplying new salt. I signed up for their 10-year plan with annual inspection, so I was given the details on that, as well as, among other information, a refrigerator magnet (how to reach them), a jar opener (which also tells how to reach them), and a postage-paid review form for Angie's List (unnecessary as I can do so here). BTW, Angie's List had supplied a coupon."

"I had a wet basement that had been a problem in my home for years before purchase of my home. The placement of a Sump pump and floor drain tile appears to stop wet foundation walls and floor. The basement now has potential to be nice area of use and living for years ahead. The service is a expensive purchase for homeowner but it is a needed purchase for my home. The finishing job leaves the need with more work if your basement floor was rough from the years of water damage. They did stop any future water damage for my home and it is safe to spend more for more fine finishing. They completed what was contracted."

"Two electricians promptly showed up from Randy's Electric. We discussed the issues at hand and they provided a bid for service to be performed which I accepted. The original wiring from my 1964 built home was fine on one ceiling light, but was damaged on the other (which I suspected was the case). They showed me the damaged and brittle wiring and I agreed that it needed to be replaced. Unfortunately, the wiring for my kitchen drain disposal also ran in to this same location and was also brittle with bad insulation. I agreed that it needed to be replaced as well. It was an unexpected additional cost, but I felt better knowing fresh wiring was in place. Overall, the services provided were excellent, I just spent more than I expected/hoped to spend. The electricians provided good communication throughout the job and thoroughly replied to all of my questions. I also feel quite relieved that this work is completed and that my lights work again. I will definitely use Randy's Electric again in the future.

French Drains questions, answered by experts

Avoid flushing non-degradable items, schedule regular inspections, and address minor clogs promptly.

Anything from debris, rust, ice, and even poor installation can cause clogs in your plumbing vents. Some signs of a clog include slow drains, gurgling sounds in drains and toilets, and bad odors. The bad odors are the most concerning, as these can include methane and hydrogen sulfide. Contact a plumber to come take a look if you notice any of these signs.

That pungent rotten egg smell coming from your drain is likely the buildup of biofilm—hair, skin, and soap scum that turns into a black sticky mess. In this case, pouring down near-boiling water, baking soda, and white vinegar will remove the smell. Keep in mind that a rotten egg smell is occasionally a sign of larger sewage line clogs and other related issues.

To clean gunk out of a sink drain, pour in a half cup of baking soda, then 1 cup of white vinegar. The two will react chemically; let them fizz for 15 minutes, then rinse with boiling water. Repeat these steps if necessary for particularly dirty sink drains, and consider a drain snake if there are clogs.

Your sewer line can get grimy quickly. To prevent sludge buildup in your sewer line, pour a mixture of 1/3 cup of vinegar and 1/3 cup of baking soda down each drain in your home once a month. After about 30 minutes, flush the drain with hot water.

Some plumbers recommend 3/4 cup of bleach instead to clean any germs and bacteria that may build up in your sewer line. But this won’t break down any active clogs, and it cannot be combined with vinegar, as the mixture will create a toxic, hazardous gas.
