Customers say: True professional

"I recently purchased a commercial building, and the back lot had a massive pile of dirt/concrete/clay due to a billboard being installed over a year ago. The dirt pile was unmanageable with shovels, so we needed professional help. BJ was able to manage the humongous pile, by hauling about 75% away, and grading the lot with the rest. We're now left with a nice, level, space to regrow. He additionally cut an approach through the rear gate so that the fence would swing all the way open, and cut an approach for a garage door that will soon be installed on the side of the building. He's professional, fast, and easy to work with. Would absolutely recommend his services"

"Awesome service, very professional, David Sr and Brandon did a fantastic job removing old culvert and installing new one as well as resurfacing my driveway. Above and beyond. Would definitely recommend Moccia landscaping, Austin was great in explaining the scope of the work to be done and estimated time to complete. Great Job."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

The best type of soil to build on is a mixture of sand and clay, known as loam soil. Loam soil has the best combination of these soil types to build a foundation on. The clay particles help with water retention, so it won’t erode like sandy soil might, and the sandy particles help with drainage, so you won’t see unsafe soil expansion or have an increased risk of leaks from water sitting against your foundation.

Hard soil could be a sign of overly dry dirt, either from poor drainage or drought. It's important to test the nutrient levels, density, and drainage capacity of your soil to see if it's absorbing water properly. Begin by adding a light layer of water and observing how long the soil retains moisture. If you experience a good deal of runoff, you may need to aerate your lawn, apply a wetting agent, or hire a professional for a closer look.

It takes one hour to dig a 10-foot trench by hand. Use a trenching shovel with a sharp tip and a long head. Plan for more time if your soil is heavy or rocky. Consider renting a trencher if you’re digging a long or deep trench or if you have challenging soil or terrain.

Professional installers often include a deep layer of crushed gravel under permeable pavers to allow more runoff to soak through into the soil below. Many installations will include multiple layers of gravel, with coarser aggregate at the base and finer aggregate that sits on top of that bottom layer. Above the gravel, you’ll often find coarse sand that helps reduce paver shifting over time. Some permeable paver designs include a water collection system set into the gravel layer to route runoff to a safe area for disposal.

You should dig 3 to 6 inches deep for plastic edging. Dig as wide as you need to fit your plastic edging into it—2 inches is usually sufficient.
