"I was surprised to see only one individual show up at the end of the day who happened to be the driveway sealcoat superintendent. (In years past other companies usually had 3-4 in a crew) He did the entire job by himself in 45 minutes, answered all my questions, and did a nice looking professional job. He explained why some driveways don't last more than a year and said I shouldn't need recoating for 2 years which is the standard. He said he had 20 years experience and it showed. I was very impressed with the job he did and we'll see how it holds up over the winter and next year and see if it makes it 2 years as promised. I switched to this company because the company that had done the job over the past decade's quality fell off sharply and my last two coating only lasted a year due to the mix being thinned to much according to the individual who did it this year. Overall I'm very pleased and look forward to using this company again in two years."

Small jobs welcome

"Concrete was between 6-12" thick which meant Dan and his crew had to bring in more gravel then grade it to the right pitch for water drainage. So far, all is good."

"I am beyond pleased with the work that Great Lakes Gardening did. They offer a wide range of services all of which were done in a timely manner and exceeded my expectations. It is so hard to find a company that is both reliable and does quality work but they are the exception! They are not only professional but they are extremely knowledgeable and provide high quality services. Will be using them in the future and will definitely recommend them to family and friends!"

Customers say: True professional

"Brad did a great job with our retaining wall, hardscaping, and pavers. He came on time and followed through as we expected. We had a number of change orders and Brad took care of these without any problems. After completion of work he cleaned the site well. He met all our expectations and it was a pleasure to work with Brad and we would hire him again."

Paving Services questions, answered by experts

An asphalt driveway should be at least 3 inches thick over a compacted gravel base. Areas with poor drainage should have a thicker stone base. To install a new asphalt driveway over an existing driveway, the new asphalt should be at least 2 inches thick and the existing driveway should be in relatively good condition.

If you're designing a new patio in an area with poor drainage, permeable pavers made from porous materials may help prevent water issues. Most permeable pavers feature a gravel-only aggregate base instead of a concrete base to allow water to flow through instead of getting trapped. While beneficial in some cases, permeable pavers come with higher initial costs and greater load-bearing limitations compared to traditional pavers.

The stones do not work well on uneven ground. If the stones are not buried into the ground and made level upon installation, they almost certainly will shift or crack on uneven ground. Additionally, rainwater or water from sprinklers can run under the edge of an uneven paver, causing erosion. In a freeze and thaw cycle, trapped water under the paver can cause the problem to worsen by shifting the stepping stones around. Use a bubble level to make sure the ground under each paver is as even as possible, even if the nearby ground is uneven.

Paving is a part of hardscaping, so all paving is hardscaping, but not all hardscaping is paving. Paving involves laying down concrete or asphalt, while hardscaping can also include the use of paving stones, bricks, gravel, wood, and more. Hardscape features that involve paving are considered permanent and will increase your property taxes, while some other hardscaping features—like those involving bricks, gravel, and paving stones—will not affect property taxes. Paving also typically requires a permit, while hardscaping features considered temporary will not.

The dimensions of a driveway apron vary based on local building codes, the width of your driveway, and the distance between the driveway and the road. On average, aprons range from 12 to 24 feet wide and 8 to 18 feet long. Typically, the end of the apron connected to the driveway matches its width—such as 10 to 12 feet for a single-car driveway—while the end at the street flares out to allow cars to turn in and out more easily. In some areas, you may not be responsible for the portion of the apron that extends beyond the sidewalk, but this depends on local laws.
