While you can put air fresheners at the opening to ductwork, most experts don’t recommend it. You will only disguise the odors rather than treat the underlying cause. Plus, blasting the concentrated chemical fragrance into your home’s air when the HVAC system is on may be overpowering and cause respiratory issues.

You should remove and clean your HRV filters about once a month, as debris will build up quickly, especially on the fresh air side of the ductwork. Even with routine cleaning, you should plan to replace the filters at least once a year or more often if you find that they’re getting dirty quickly during operation.

Professional air duct cleaning takes two to five hours, depending on the size of your home and the extent of the cleaning. The ductwork in standard homes with total square footage of 1,500 to 2,000 will take closer to two hours. Larger homes with extensive return and supply ductwork—often over 3,000 square feet—can push up to five hours. Keep in mind that related cleanings and repairs in your HVAC system will add to this total and may require two visits.

While most air conditioners can last between 10 and 20 years, they will only last this long (or longer) if properly taken care of. Routine maintenance and inspections help keep your AC unit running in tip-top shape but understanding what factors will decrease its lifespan will also help keep your unit running cool.

Some things that shorten your AC’s lifespan include:

  • Extreme outdoor conditions, like high humidity or extensive salt spray 

  • Improper installation

  • Extended run times, either by the unit being too small or the thermostat setting too low

  • Not performing required maintenance

The only immediate step you need to take after the air duct cleaning finishes is changing your furnace filter. It’s likely to accumulate some dust and debris during the cleaning process. There’s no need to replace the filter before the cleaning starts, as a dirty air filter won’t affect the cleaning process. Regularly replacing your air filter is one of the best steps you can take to keep your air ducts clean in the months after a pro cleans them. The pro should clean up any mess left behind and reattach all the grates.
