Providing security to the Lakeshore for over 25years, Family owned locally run

"It took over a week to receive an estimate after stopping by the store knowing exactly what I wanted. I never did receive one in writing, which I should have insisted upon. The service team was professional and courteous. They had to drill into my door and doorframe as I didn’t have a deadbolt previously. They cleaned everything up and showed me how to use the smart lock. I had to ask for an itemized receipt after paying online via Square. I was shocked when I looked it over. The pricing for the products (one wifi deadbolt and two replacement handle sets) was outrageous, Every item was marked up over 50% more than what I would have paid from Lowes or online. The wifi deadbolt was marked up almost 60% ($175 over Lowes and other retail prices). I went in to the store to talk to the manager about it. He had no sympathy and claimed he needed to mark product up that much in order to pay his staff, and that’s part of what comes in dealing with a small business. It was clear from the moment the conversation began that he was not going to budge on his pricing. He had my money and that was that. Shame on me for not insisting on a written estimate. Shame on him for his ridiculous price gouging and taking advantage of his customers. FYI - Holland Lock charges for a service call and then labor on top of it, so I paid $70 for the service call and then an hour for the deadbolt install and half-hour to swap out the other two knobs. Summary: The on-site service was great, it took multiple follow ups to get a verbal estimate, and their pricing is extremely out of line. I cannot recommend them because of their pricing. I am very supportive of local businesses, but not when they price gouge."

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Expect to pay between $50 to $200 if you hire a locksmith to change your locks. That figure includes labor and the cost of basic hardware. The cost will naturally be higher if you plan to install more expensive locks, like smart locks, and if you need a lot of them.

Homeowners can save money by replacing locks themselves. A typical rekeying kit costs about $10 to $25. The only additional cost is purchasing new house keys, and those are no more than a few dollars per key. If you want to replace the locks on your own completely, the main cost is the price of the locks themselves. A standard knob-style lock starts around $25, while electronic locks and smart locks will run in the hundreds of dollars. The only additional tools you should need are a tape measure, screwdriver, and screws if they are not already provided.

Typically, it can take around 15 minutes to rekey a lock. The time depends on the type of lock and how skilled you are at rekeying. The first time you rekey a lock, it may take a little longer. Once you get the hang of the process, it will move along much more quickly.

As with any computer, smart locks can be hacked by someone with the technical skills to do so, but most people do not have that ability, making smart locks relatively safe. If you have any concerns about a compromised smart lock, opt for an encrypted smart lock, change your Wi-Fi password, and make sure that you only give out your password to trusted family and friends.

Keyless locks are great for convenience, letting you unlock doors with a code or your phone so you don't need to carry keys around. They also often come with helpful features like temporary codes for guests. On the downside, they can be more costly up front and do require batteries that will eventually need replacing. If you value ease of use and additional security features, keyless locks are worth the investment.

Newer, electric-powered door locks generally have a life span of five years or less. That’s thanks, in large part, to a phenomenon called planned obsolescence, in which products are programmed to need replacing after a certain amount of time. That’s also why older, manual, push-key locksets can last up to 30 years with regular cleanings and maintenance. When it does come time for a new set-up, know that the cost to change locks ranges from $130 to $500 on average.
