Yes, you can always make an existing window bigger, but the job complexity varies widely depending on the location of the window and the framing around it. Exterior walls are always load-bearing, so making windows wider will require structural changes that make for a more complex but doable project. Making windows taller often won’t require structural changes.

Bay windows are supported by braces and industrial strength cables, often at the top of the window but sometimes at the bottom. The bay window may need buttress supports if installed on the second floor. Wood screws on the interior also hold the bay window in place. Bay windows are heavy and need proper support to prevent sagging and wall damage. You need to ensure that the support system can hold the weight of the window and the roof cab over the window.

It’s easy to tell if you have low-E windows. Light a match or grab a pen light and hold it up to your windows. You should see multiple reflections in the window—four for double-pane windows. If one of the reflections is a slightly different color than the other three, you have low-E windows. If you don’t have low-E windows, all the reflections will be the same color.

Use a high-quality caulk with silicone around your windows, as it’s waterproof and shrink-proof. Or, you can use a caulk consisting of polyurethane or acrylic if you want to be able to paint over it. Caulk made from silicone is not paintable. Avoid using inexpensive caulk that has a resin or oil base. These caulks will not last long and may shrink and pull away from the window as temperatures go up and down.

Clean with non-abrasive cleaners and a soft cloth, avoiding ammonia-based products that can degrade the film.
