50 years of experience

Caretakers was started in 1975 by Don Crowley. After working several years for a landscape contractor he set off on his own. His vast knowledge of landscape construction and training from installation to maintenance is far from average. After being in business for 40 years we are still considered a small company employing 12-14 people during the busy season. This gives us the ability to be customer oriented. Although we are a small company focused primarily on West Michigan, we do serve the entire state from the U.P. to Detroit. Ten years ago Don brought in Brian Demmick formerly of Demmicks Nursery in Byron Center to expand the business and have the ability to take on larger projects. Once again in 2014 Don is looking to expand, bringing in new partners and expanding the business to offer snow plowing, parking lot sweeping, irrigation, powerwashing, site lighting etc creating a full service property maintenance company.

Lawn Fertilization and Treatment questions, answered by experts

One of the most effective ways to improve lawn absorption is to learn how to aerate your lawn. This is a process where you poke tiny holes all throughout it to break up tough soil and sediment, creating pathways for sunlight, water, air, and nutrients to seep into the plant’s roots. In turn, it promotes stronger root systems, making your lawn or plants less susceptible to pests and disease. Ideally, you’ll want to aerate your lawn at least once per year during the growing season—think late summer to early fall.

Whether organic or synthetic fertilizers are better for your lawn depends on your goals, budget, and plans for other lawn treatments. Organic fertilizer costs more but is likely to benefit your lawn more in the long run by improving the soil as well as feeding your grass. Synthetic fertilizers get faster results but don’t enrich the soil and may contaminate nearby bodies of water if you live on a shoreline. A hybrid fertilizer may be an option to give you the benefits found in both organic and synthetic fertilizers.

You should water your lawn two or three days before putting down fertilizer to ensure it can properly absorb it. It's good to apply fertilizer if the ground is moist, but you want to avoid overwatering or flooding the area because it can prevent the grass from absorbing the nutrients. Consider weather conditions when scheduling your fertilizer treatment and read the instructions to see how long you should wait to water after application.

Before you put down grass seed, you should cultivate your soil or add two inches of topsoil. You should also put down fertilizer at the same time as your seed to prompt healthy growth. Be sure to water after you put down grass seed, especially for the first two weeks.

Custom fertilization considers grass type, soil condition, and climate, optimizing growth and reducing pests or diseases while improving overall landscape aesthetics.
