"We recently had our roof replaced by Top Notch LABOR and were very pleased with the experience. Doug was great to work with throughout the process. The work was completed professionally , on time, and the crew kept everything clean throughout the project. Communication was excellent and the roof looks great. We would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for quality roofing work. Sherri Weil"

"We had been seeing Renaissance Restoration ads in the Grosse Pointe News for a while, so when it was time for renovations we decided to give them a call for a quote on our work. Mr. Craig, the owner came out and talked to us about our kitchen project as well as flooring. The amount of time they spent blew away the competition. They were genuinely interested in the details and the project. During the entire time of the project we were made to feel that our investment in the project was secondary to the detail and perfection of the whole scope. I wish more companies had an old fashioned attitude like Renaissance, where the craft is still the most important part."

"Tina at CCR Renovations was wonderful to work with. She was very responsive to phone calls and emails. The price was the best out of all the quotes I received. When the contractor arrived to give the quote, he brought samples and explained the differences in material.  All the work was done within one day.  They even offer a first responders discount. I would highly recommend CCR Renovations."

Countertops and Backsplashes questions, answered by experts

If you have light renovation experience, you should be able to build your own countertop made from wood or laminate. These tend to be the most DIY-friendly materials, but you’ll need to be comfortable using a circular saw and taking precise measurements. When it comes to installation, leave anything that involves plumbing, electricity, or gas lines to the pros.

Quartzite is more expensive than granite, largely because of its rarity. Granite is naturally more common. A granite slab generally costs $40 to $60 per square foot (excluding super-rare types), while quartzite slabs cost anywhere from $50 to $150 per square foot.

With both materials, it’s usually more affordable to purchase stones that are readily available in your location. You may need to import other stones, which come at a higher cost.

The best budget-friendly countertop option depends on personal preference. Concrete is a great alternative to more expensive materials, as it can be cured and treated for unique designs. Another cheap material worth considering is plywood. It can be laminated or stained to suit nearly any aesthetic. Granite remnants are also a good choice.

Yes, you can use paint if you want to refresh your tile countertops. However, you must be mindful of the type of paint you use. Look for options explicitly created for tile that are also waterproof and durable. Over time, the paint will chip, so this is not considered a long-term solution for busy kitchens.

Granite countertops cost an average of $3,250 compared to $2,250 for tile countertops. Granite is also harder to DIY than tile, given its weight and bulk, which increases the overall labor cost of installation. Over time, both types of countertops may need sealing to remain resistant to water, heat, and other common kitchen elements.
