"I was referred by the hardware store Pro Program for Master Electrician to do some projects we needed accomplished. Skeptical at first; Then, I received a call about 15 minutes later after submitting my proposed project. John, the Master Electrician with Calvary Electric with over 20+ years of experience, said to me, I am extremely busy but I promise, I will work you in within the week. Only two days later, he shows up and is ready to install (2) ceiling fans, switches, run additional electrical lines, etc. John broke everything down, step-by-step for us, what our options are and the exact price it would take to get the projects completed. Then, he noticed I was wearing a Marine Combat-Wounded cover. He said, you are a Vet I see, that is an automatic 10% off I told him he did not need to do that and he said, When I do a job, I look for discounts for the people that request my services, it is the least I can do. I was shocked. We talked a little more and my wife, Rachel and I, made a decision and John got right to work. During the install, he gave continuous updates on where he was and what he was doing. After the project was completed, we did a walk through together (John, Rachel, and Myself) and we were shocked at how outstanding it turned out! He showed us both fan features, how he changed the switches around, so it would be easier for us to control. Then, Joh cleaned up the work areas he had been in. It was cleaner after John left than it was before he arrived. He shook both of our hands, thanked me for my Service, and told us if you have any issues, any at all, contact me immediately and handed me his business card. In summation, I have been around the world while in the Marines. Met, talked and worked with a lot of different and very passionate people, who love their professions. A 10,000-watt generator can run a small to mid-sized central AC unit (typically up to 3 tons or 36,000 BTU) along with a few other appliances. However, larger AC units or additional loads will require a bigger generator. Consult a local generator installer to ensure you add the correct size generator to your home.

As long as they have enough fuel, whole-house generators can run for weeks at a time (400 to 500 hours) without suffering too much wear and tear. However, this type of extensive use isn’t ideal if you want to extend the life of your generator.

Two important points. First, some generators may need you to periodically check oil levels every day or so and refill as necessary for safe operation. Second, if your generator uses a fuel tank, keep it regularly full so it doesn’t suddenly shut off. Many backup generators can run through a full tank in a day when they are powering large portions of a home.

In some situations, yes. Never try to put biofuel into any home generator without checking the specifics first. If a generator has the ability to run on diesel, it can also run pure biofuel (the clear kind made from seed oils, for example). But if you are using biofuel made from animal fats or vegetable oils, the generator will need significant modifications before it can handle a sludgier type of biofuel.

Generally, you’ll want to keep between 60 and 70 feet between the generator and the transfer switch. There are a few reasons for this, including:

  • The distance reduces the noise coming from the generator into your home.

  • It increases efficiency because you won’t have a voltage drop from this short of a distance.

  • Prevents carbon monoxide poisoning: keep at least 15 feet between your generator and an open window.
