"I was impressed with Chuck from Shamrock Chimney. He was realistic in his discussion and went thru various options from converting to a gas fireplace to wood inserts. He discussed the issues with the existing field stone face and converting to a two way fireplace. He certainly made me comfortable to consider Shamrock should the project move forward."

Small jobs welcome

"We were told our custom 1970s stone fireplace with a hole in the fire box was a tear out by companies who sell fireplaces and fireboxes, and this is a $20k -no exaggerating $20k- fix if we wanted to replace the enormous fire place in our home. We had some buyers remorse for this home at that point because no service was available for a tear out either unless they also did the rebuild work so removing it wasn't an option. We have been stuck for years without use the of a large fixure. We thought a repair might be a short term solution and it ended up being a long term solution and with repairs we are LOVING the fireplace experience. The repairs are beautiful. I plan to finish the rest of the fire box next season."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

The local climate heavily impacts fireplace service. Lansing experiences severe freeze-thaw cycles that break down mortar and crack chimney crowns. Schedule masonry repairs between August and October so the mortar cures fully before the first hard freeze. Additionally, inspect the condition of your chimney liner. Repairing the surface without addressing a damaged liner causes the work to fail prematurely.

Helpful?

Inspect your chimney every spring after the harsh MI winter ends. Look for crumbling mortar, white mineral stains, and flaking bricks on the exterior. Inside your home, check for a smoky odor, visible rust on the damper, or heavy soot buildup. High winds and heavy snow loads also cause hidden damage, so book an annual fireplace service inspection before the October heating season begins.

Helpful?

If newly repaired mortar cracks within a few winters, the contractor used a mix unsuited for the Michigan climate or completed the work too late in the season. White mineral stains returning after waterproofing indicate an incorrect, non-breathable sealant. Additionally, persistent smoky odors after a gas insert installation mean the flue liner is incorrectly sized and requires immediate professional fireplace service to correct.

Helpful?

Consider scheduling fireplace service between May and August. This timing avoids conflicts during the busy Michigan heating season. If you own an older home, verify that your flue has the correct liner for your current fuel type, especially if a previous owner converted it to natural gas. Finally, trim any mature tree branches hanging over your chimney to prevent debris buildup and moisture damage.

Helpful?

Older Lansing properties feature multi-flue chimneys that vent both the fireplace and the furnace, complicating fireplace service. Heavy clay soils also cause foundation settling, leading to a leaning chimney stack. Furthermore, steep roof pitches require specialized staging for safe access. Home additions built around the original chimney block exterior access and alter the roofline, which directly impacts your system's draft performance.
